CDS In-Person and @ Home Equity and Inclusion
Kids zooming from home need support from parents, grandparents (may not have technical ability). Have to wait until working parents get home sometimes
Support needed differs a lot by age
Social emotional learning
Emotional and developmental needs of children. Kids may act differently because they are not getting this in person contact with their teacher
Access to the internet is not equal across the community. Are we aware of internet access across our community?
Manage food insecurity
Being able to have the space for learning in your home
Some independent schools have actively helped setting up internet access for students. Ensure our faculty / staff is aware of what the school is doing
Some families sending kids in person may otherwise have chosen to have kids at home, but are working and can't do that
Existing kids in care at CDS cannot mix with their own cohort during in person outdoor activities
25% of working women have had to downsize their career
Feeling fortunate that we have a choice, when other schools do not
Extended family and caretaking definitions in this time has changed
Zoom backgrounds surface major socioeconomic differences in our community. Could we have a standard zoom background for our classes. Maybe something the class chooses?
Ensure inclusion, kindness, generosity, allow time, in communications. Some families who haven't been sure have felt pressure to choose
Thinking and preferences between OHL and in person may change over time, which we should recognize. How can we provide more access to the information about the choices, initially and over time?
School transparency in communication
Some families are in crisis related to health within their family, which can lead to 'mass hysteria' based on their personal situations
Delivery of content and curriculum.
Equity and inclusion issues for teachers
Teaching in this environment is very hard
Differences between inclusion & equity vs. family preferences
The two models are not equal. Is CDS feeling pressure to present them as equal?
It would be a mistake to assume that in person learning is "back to the way it was", because it is not and it has also had to be reinvented. Both models are new.
e.g. kids can't hug their teachers or touch each other
Need to really dive deep into knowing what the needs are. The solutions may be different for different OHL families. Some may need a lot more support in the emotional direction, others may need more support on the academic / curriculum aspect. Knowing everyone's individual needs is the only way to meet them.
Differences in things that affect the parents and things that affect the kids. The kids may be "rolling with it" better than the parents in some cases.
Accounting for loss and grief, especially in BIPOC communities
