ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
A student with ADHD has significant problems with attention, impulse behavior, and hyperactivity
They have trouble controlling their attention, trouble focusing on important things, seem to act without thinking first, and have excessive physical activity
The student has trouble finishing what they started, have disorganized work, and are fidgety or restless

may be because cases were missed
because of violence, faster paced TV or shows, increased use of food additives, demand upon children at younger ages, or sugar consumption
boys are 5-9 times more likely to be diagnosed than girls
tendency for boys to show their hyperactive/ impulsive behaviors

Symptoms
academic and disciplinary problems in school
high rates of off-task behavior, learning difficulties as material gets more complex
may experience social problems, impulsive behavior makes it harder to form friendships
treating ADHD
mild cases are generally treated through a combination of counseling and special education assistance
moderate/severe cases are treated with behavioral intervention and stimulant drugs
teaching students with ADHD
carefully structure the classroom environment
seat them next to children who are good workers
seat students with ADHD as far from distractions as possible (doors, windows, pencil sharpeners)
have a clearly organized room (color coded, labels)
help the student set up their own organization systems
structure activities
daily routines to help them know what is coming up next
state rules clearly
post visual reminders of expected behavior
structure an escape for students who easily tire of routine
allow the student to stand if that helps them pay attention better, only if they do not distract other students
help students focus attention
use private signals to bring their attention back to the classroom, use nonverbal cues
help student develop awareness of their behavior
using checklists of steps for assignments can help the student recognize desired behavior
use charts to show target behaviors, good or bad
give clear feedback so students are aware if their behavior is appropriate/ inappropriate
provide opportunities for them to use their excess energy
create exploration centers, dramatize the works studied by making plays of the readings
