Moving images

Films are made from a string of images, which combine to move.

There are usually 25 or 29 images a second, these images are called frames.
Buffering
When a video is downloading, segments need to be stored. This is called the buffer.
When a user is watching part of a video, the buffer is used to download the rest.
When the buffer isn't filling quick enough lower quality images are used, resulting in the video being pixelated.

Bitmaps

Has details about every pixel, which makes up the image.
Since they store every pixel, this results in a large file size.
