Malignancy- this is when the cells in the ascites becomes malignant. This can is usually just treated through palliative care.
Cirrhosis, Hepatitis B and/or C, and alcoholism are great risk factors for developing ascites due to these all having to do with damage to the liver.

Complications

Hepatorenal syndrome- This syndrome is one of the conditions that can develop secondary to ascites, again, due to damage of the liver.

Pleural effusion- this is a condition that can coexist with ascites, especially when the cause is cirrhosis of the liver.
