sunshine and shading design
shadow angles : express sun's position
HSA : horizontal shadow angle
HSA is the difference in azimuth sun's position and orientation of the building face considered
describes the angle in plan
relevant for vertical sshading devices such as fins
when the HSA is between +/-90 and 270, them the sun is behind the facade is in shade there is no HSA
VSA : vertical shadow angle
VSA is measured on a plane perpendicular to the building face
describes projection of solar altitude
VSA can exist only when the HSA is between - 90 to +90
describes the angle made on the vertical plane
when the sun is directly opposite the face the solar altitude angle will equal to the VSA
calculation of HSA and VSA
latitude ( which angle north/south)
time, date and month of the year
azimuth and altitude
orientation of the building facade
VSA and HSA are used to
determine the extent of sunlight penetration into the building
determine the extent of overshadowing
design appropriately sized shadibg control devices
