ASSESSMENT
Formative
Definition: Teachers use this form of assessment to gather evidence, provide academic feedback, and adjust instruction. This form of assessment allows learners to change their behaviors or thoughts, therefore, they are typically for little or no grade. These assessments are low stakes or informal.
Example 1: Bellringer - Students will be given a 1-2 questions from recent notes to do in 5 minutes. They will submit the answers in peardeck so teacher can see the data.
Example 2 In class, independent activity - Students would complete 3-5 questions on their own after notes and guided practice. This gives the teacher an opportunity to assess what they mastered and what there are misconceptions about.

Example 2: District Assessment is an end of nine-weeks assessment that makes sure students are on track for STARR.
Diagnostic
Definition: Teachers use this type of assessment to plan instruction based on students' strengths, weaknesses, and prior misconceptions. Often times, we call this a pre-assessment.
Example 1: Pre-assessment before teaching a unit - Students are given an assessment over a unit before it is taught that is similar to the end of unit assessment, so the teacher knows what to focus on during instruction.
Example 2: Bellringer can be used as a Diagnostic assessment by throwing in 1-2 questions over the next unit to assess what students already know or do not know.
Performance
Definition: This is an assessment that requires students to perform a task to demonstrate their mastery of an objective. This allows students to switch up from typical paper tests and questions.
-
Example 1: Students physically put themselves on a number line to demonstrate mastery of integer operations. For example, if the student was given 3 + (-2), then they would go to the positive 3 on the number line and then show two jumps to the left and end on positive one.
