Interim/Benchmark
STAAR: Texas standardized test given to all students 3rd grade and above to assess their knowledge that was obtained in their given grade level for the year.
-
Definition: These assessments help to determine if students are on track with content throughout the year. The data collected from these assessments will help determine where intervention is needed before future assessments.
Summative
Mid-Term Exams: Formal test given to assess what the student learned throughout a given unit of instructional time.
Formal Essays: These are treated as a formal test, where the question or prompt is given by the teacher and the student is required to demonstrate their understanding through a formal writing.
Definition: These are used to evaluate all students at the end of the unit. This is a formal test to see what the students have learned in the unit. Summative assessments usually hold a high grade value.
Performance
Debates: This requires students to become knowledgeable about a certain topic in order to promote their side in a debate against a classmate or group of classmates.
Portfolios: When presented with this task, students create a portfolio of work throughout a given period of time. The student selects their best work to add to the portfolio. Once the time allotted is up, the teacher reviews the portfolio as an assessment.
Definition: Performance assessments require students to perform a task, rather than simply answer questions on paper. Performance tasks vary from grade level and content focus.
Formative
Exit Tickets: After the lesson time is complete, pass each student an exit ticket that can range from the student simply answering a question on paper, to them completing a short quiz on paper or technology. (QR codes are helpful when using exit tickets to enhance efficient time spent)
Graffiti Wall: The teacher hangs chart paper around the room and has each group of students complete the prompt on their chart paper and decorate as they wish. Once all groups finish, the groups rotate to other groups charts and can then add comments, corrections, or extensions to their peers work. This provides the teacher with whole class understanding.
Definition: These assessments are given throughout a unit to help the teacher monitor the effectiveness of instruction. They don't exist to offer much grade value. They simply assess how well a student is learning as a result of the instruction up to that point.
Diagnostic
Running Records: Quick and easy way to determine a students reading level, and monitor their reading progress.
KWL Chart: By having the students begin a KWL chart at the beginning of the unit, the students are able to effectively communicate what they know, what to know, and eventually what they learned. This can be completed throughout a unit.
Definition: This is a form of Pre-Assessment that allows the teacher to have a starting point of student knowledge. It later helps the teacher to see how much each student learned as a result of the teaching.
