rules of adventure
My story
Got a lot of things wrong, but the adventure thing I got right
Got to live overseas for 7 years, climb lots of mountains, explore 6 continents,
Will share some of those stories as we go along
Learned that living a life of adventure is all in your mind. We think it's money and time, but really it's us.
1 No regrets
Deathbed regrets
You are not going to lay on your deathbed and congratulate yourself for saving money, saving vacation days, playing it safe
3 It doesn't have to make sense
Moving to Colorado
Following your heart, not your head
Ask yourself yes or no questions
6 Choose wisely.
You can't do all the things, even if you have unlimited time and money.
By saying no to good things, you make room for great things
5 Enjoy the journey, or don't go at all
The main event is never guaranteed
Is it worth it to train for months and hate it?
Denali
This year, I really started saying no more, and it has made my adventure life so much better!
These days, I really consider who I'm going with as much as what I'm doing.
7 Be a leader
I stopped letting others choose for me and did something completely different
4 Embrace discomfort
You will never, ever feel ready. Your brain isn't programmed that way.
Convinced I'm going to die before Bolivia
If you're not going to love the journey — the people, the place, the whole experience — cancel the trip and eat the cost. It's not worth it.
Best strategy: allow this discomfort to be there. Your brain is just doing it's job! Use mind body strategies like breathwork to quiet down the noise.
Other people may not come with you, and that's OK.
Waiting to take a trip until you have someone to go with you is a mugs game
Do amazing things, and see who it attracts into your life.
9 Trust and Surrender
There's no point in being attached to an outcome you have no control over.
Some of the best life lessons have come to me after so called failures
Orizaba - whipping myself
Everything is happening for you in perfect timing
When we stop trying to control everything, we open up to the goodness the universe has planned for us. Maybe what's coming is even better than you expected!
8 Adventure must fit into your life
Can be a way to escape the truth of your life
Remember that the adventure thing could all end tomorrow (brain injury)
Important to love and be loved
Many of the people and communities that loved me most loved me before I climbed my first mountain
Think you don't have the time or money to live a life of adventure? Then maybe it's time to get out of your own way! Believe it or not, most of the limitations in our lives don't come from outside of us. They actually come from our own heads. And the good news about that is that once we're aware of them, we can release them. So in today's episode, I'm going to share with you my 9 rules of living a life of adventure. Warning: listening to this episode may inspire you to sell all of your possessions and walk across Mongolia with $20 in your pocket. And actually, that sounds like a lot of fun. So buckle up, here we go.
2 Start by getting out of your own way
We tell ourselves stories about why we can't do the thing (money, time, body, fitness). But all the limitations are in our mind.
Your life will match your mindset. If you really want it, if you really believe, you will find the money and time.
Being resourceful - Chris Guillebeau selling his car to travel.
Maybe it's time to sell that couch you're sitting on and buy a plane ticket.
Your dreams may seem stupid or foolhardy to others — and also even to you.
