How To Get Drinking Water
Sand Water
Step Two: Assemble the device. First put the fist water bottle upside down. Next put the piece of cloth over the opening of the water bottle. Then add the gravel, after the gravel add the small rocks. Then take your second water bottle and cut it in half. Place the bottom half under the upside down water bottle. Finally pour the water through the upside down water bottle from the top.
Step Three: Once the water if filtered place the water over fire and boil it to kill anything still living in the water. Finally wait for it to cool and drink it.
Step One: Gather the materials. Two empty water bottles,
a piece of cloth, gravel, and small rocks.
Cons: Finding a way to cut the water bottle in half. Making the fire.
Pros: Easy materials to find on the island and easy to make. No weather restrictions other than making a fire.
Idea 2
Heat the water than filter
Cons: I think I am going to stick to idea one because I think its better that you filter it first so it doesn't collect bacteria when going through the bottle.
How: I would use the exact same method as idea one however I would boil the water first and while it is boiling i would make the same water filter used in idea one to make the process much quicker.
Pros: This way would be faster because you could build the contraption while the water is boiling.
Idea 3
Cons: Not as good as a filter compared to idea one and two.
How: Once again I will use a water bottle but this time it will not be filled with rocks and gravel. Instead I will remove those but keep the piece of cloth. I will add more pieces of cloth over top of the first one to keep as much sand out of the water as possible.
Pros: Takes less materials. Reduces the possibility that something like a small rock gets into the water. The water has the least amount of contact with other potentially harmful substances. Will filter out sand very easily if the sand has not been dissolved into the water too much.
Salt Water
Using 2 bowls to evaporate and condensate the water
Pros
More water can be purified vs the water bottle method
Simple and easy to do
Not limited to the amount of plastic on the island
Cons
Takes Longer
Hard to find a translucent lid or cover
Materials
Bowls or coconut shells
Clear plastic cover I.E. Cut open and flattened water bottle
tool to cut water bottle
How
Take a bowl and fill it with salt water then take a smaller bowl and place inside above the water level. Take the plastic bottle and cover the big bowl. Place a rock or weight on the plastic bottle above where the small bowl is to make it the lowest point. Leave in the sun all day and when you come back it should be full with water.
Using 2 Plastic Water Bottles and Creating a chamber where the water evaporates into another sealed container.
Materials
2 Plastic Water Bottles
A tool to cut with i.e. wooden knife
Pros
Doesn't require much attended time
Materials are readily available on island
Simple and easy to construct
Cons
Doesn't produce very much water
Takes a long time
Has to be sunny and warm to work
How
Take 2 water bottles, 1 bigger than the other, and cut the top off the smaller bottle and the bottom off the bigger bottle.
Fold up the edges of the bigger bottle and place the smaller bottle bottom inside after it is filled with salt water.
Then bury the bottle halfway in sand and wait for most of the day. At the end of the day, the condensed water should collect in the folded sides.
Distilling via Boiling
How
Fill the bigger bowl with salt water and place the smaller one inside making sure it is above the water level. Next start your fire and put your lid upside down covering the bowl. eventually all the clean water will drip down from the lowest point in the lid into the smaller bowl.
Form a bowl or pot out of a heat safe material such as clay. Then make another one that is smaller. Find/ make a lid that you can cover the heating vessel with.
Materials
Lid type device
Can be made out of clay, plastic or metal.
Fire wood/Fire
2 Heat safe vessel such as clay
Cons
More involved process
There are more materials
Pros
You can produce pure water anytime of the day in most weather conditions.
You can produce more pure water as it doesn't take as long
It Is quick
Rainwater
Idea #1
materials
plastic container
wood for a flat surface to stand on
wooden knife to cut holes in the plastic
garbage can lid
pros
doesn't take to much time to build.
doesn't take to many resources to build
cons
you have to have a plastic bucket on your island
that the bucket may not be clean in the first place contaminating the water
how
on a larger scale you would take a garbage bin and flip the lid up side down and create holes in the center on the lid to let rain water drain in through the holes.
Idea #2
pros
more surface area for collection
tons of storage space
materials
funnel shaped object made out of wood or plastic
knife to create a whole in the plastic
plastic container (preferably a bin type)
flat peace of wood with a whole in the middle that fits the funnel
cons
the construction of the funnel
the amount of material needed/ the type of material needed
how
you would take a bucket of any size and place a flat surface like slabs of wood across the bucket then you would create one hole that is big enough for the funnel end to fit in to the hole as air tight as it could be.
Idea #3
pros
fast to create
doesn't involve to many materials
cons
the water could escape from the leaves in the dent
their may be not curved structures on the island
due to the fact that their will be holes in the design that their could be some flaw.
materials
pam tree leaves
curved structure- made out of and kind of material
If their were coconuts on the island you could used then as your round bowl.
how
if you found like a fallen tree with a dent on it you could roll to out into the sun and place leaves in the dent to create a bowl type shape and using the sap to make the leaf's stick together.
