The first-ever horror movie was 'The House of the Devil' in 1896
Widely considered to be the best time for the horror genre, where between 1920s and 1930s, this saw many classics being produced, it can be nearly divided down the middle to create a separation between the silent classics and the talkies.
The horror genre was invented by Horace Walpole, whose Castle of Otranto(1765) may be said to have founded the horror story as a literary form
In the first horror movie, there was no sound so over the years sound has become a very important thing in horrors as they help create tension and enigma.
Something that has been used in horror since the beginning is special effects, in the first horror they used very simple special effects. Such as things moving from one end of the screen to the other.
Symbolic codes have been in horror since the start as well, in The house of the devil, there is a bat which is a symbolic codes for a vampire.
