Berlin Crisis, Blockade and Airlift

The Ussr initiated a blockade of all travel access in and out of west berlin which was Stalin's attempt to force the western allies to surrender all of berlin to the soviet zone:
All rail, road and canal links between the west of berlin and the western zones were severed
The western zones did not back down and proceeded to airlift food, coal and other essentials into West Berlin to sustain the 2 million people there
After 322 days, Stalin realized the west would not give up and the blockade was lifted on 12 may 1949
