EXPOSITORY ESSAY

- Listing the order of events.
- Comparing two or more things.
- Explaining a cause and effect.
- Describing a problem and a solution.
FORMAT
- The main idea must be narrow enough to be supported within the essay.
- Each supporting paragraph must have a main supporting idea and all other sentences must relate directly to it.
- Transition words or phrases are important as they help the flow and reinforce the logic.
- The conclusion paragraph should originally restate the main idea and the main supporting ideas.
- Finish with a statement that reinforces your position in a meaningful and memorable way.
- Don't introduce new material in the conclusion.
PARTS OF ESSAY
INTRODUCTION
- Attention getter.
- Thesis (point).
SUPPORTING DETAIL
- 3 Supporting detail.
- Gives evidence.
- Supports the Thesis.
- Show how those parts relate to each other as well as to the overall whole.
CONCLUSION
- Readdresses the Thesis.
- Wraps up the subject without leaving any loose ends and gives readers a sense of the importance of knowing the topic.
SOME NOTES
- This essay is presenting information, so the tone should be formal.
- Avoid slang. Example :
1) The elephant is really phat.
2) The cat makes me laugh lol.
- Avoid 'I statements'. Example :
1) I think England sounds like a nice place to visit.
- Instead say, "England is a great place to visit."
REFERENCES
- If do research for the paper, a reference page is required.
- Reference page lists the resources used for research.
- Site the source that used in the essay.
- If writing an essay in class or a test situation with no preparation time, so a reference page is not required.
