Green Deen: The Earth Is a Mosque
The Six Principles of a Green Deen
Core spiritual principles and practices that align Islam and the environment so closely
Being a steward of the Earth
God created us from the Earth and we must care for and protect the Earth in a sustainable way.
We are held accountable for our actions and our fate is determined by how we treat the planet.
Honoring the covenant, or trust, we have with God to be protectors of the planet
Following Green Deen means knowing that we are entrusted by God to act as stewards of the Earth. The trust is a promise to protect the planet and it comes with the freedom to make decisions.
God gave us the ability to make decisions and He trusts us to make responsible choices (cooperate with nature).
We must praise the Creator, take care of the planet and take care of one another
Seeing signs of God everywhere
Everything in the natural world is a sign of our Creator. The signs are evidence of God.
Reflecting on these signs, we can learn about ourselves and about the reality of the connectivity that is at the core of Islam.
These experiences with nature give us a sense of awe. Our awe is our sense that we are part of the amazing beauty of those signs.
Moving towards justice
Treating the Earth like a Mosque means treating the natural world in a just and fair manor.
Our economic system has allowed us to take less responsibility of the sacred aspects of nature and instead the natural world is seen as an opportunity for resource extraction.
Our actions should not be to fight for resources, but instead we should focus on sharing resources equally.
Understanding the Oneness of God and His creation
Everything comes from Allah and Allah is the creator and sustainer of everything
Light is an expression of the oneness of Allah and His creation. Everything is comprised of the same basic elements - little flashes of light.
Living in balance with nature
Everything in nature is made to exist in perfect balance, so seeing the Earth as a mosque means respecting this balance.
God created us to maintain the balance. Reflecting on the balance is a form of worship.
Islam teaches humanity not to disturb the balance.
Everything is sacred and the world is a mosque
Can pray and worship anywhere
Prophet Muhammad - “Wherever you may be at the time of prayer, you may pray, for it (the Earth) is all a mosque.”
Transformed the way the world was seen
Islam teaches deep love of the Earth and the universe through the six principle explained above
Islam is a deen which means religion or creed
Islam can contribute to anyone who advocates for the planet
Work as a team to protect the environment
Can also educate people who do not know how to be stewards
Green deen is a conscious choice to practice and follow Islam
Respects relationship between the Earth and religion
We are stewards and need to protect nature
Care for self, others, and planet
Green Deen is both spiritual and scientific
Through science we can gain a better understanding of God's creations which will help us take better care of the universe
Many believe that pollution and climate change is due to scientific innovation and creation
Need to follow God's guidance in order to use science to make a positive impact
Part of the same perfect creations
Greening Your Deen Through Prayer
Living a Green Deen means opening your heart to the possibility of...
Being a steward of the Earth
Honoring the trust we have from God to be protectors of the planet
Seeing the signs of God everywhere
Moving toward justice
Understanding the Oneness of God and His creation
Living in balance with nature
Prayer is the key means by which we pursue our Deen on a daily basis.
It starts with a reflection of ourselves. We need to get right within ourselves in order to treat the Earth as the sacred place it is.
You can achieve this through simple prayer, meditation, contemplation or love.
The author achieved this all over the United States. He said that anywhere he travelled, he found a place to pray. This showed him that Earth really is a mosque.
We also need to heal our hearts.
Our hearts determine whether we are good or bad, so we need our hearts to heal to be good.
We can both our hearts and the planet through prayer
The way we treat the planet is a reflection of how we treat ourselves, and the way we treat ourselves is a reflection of how we treat the planet.
Building the Green Deen Movement
Four actions to continue building this movement
We need to get educated
The way people have managed the major systems of water, waste, energy and food has shaped civilization through history.
We have to be the best stewards we can be and find ways to reduce the impact that our actions have on the planet.
We need to connect with people of other faiths
We are more powerful and more compassionate to others when we realize that the Oneness and connectivity of life is the key to living a sustainable life.
We need to connect with other faiths to raise our children as part of a larger community of "people of faith".
Through service, we can connect with people of all faiths.
We need to tell our stories
Stories of actively engaging in protecting the planet inspires others to do the same thing.
Shows us that we are here for a purpose
We need to be smart
This a movement for new ideas and creativity to be more efficient in operating with less waste.
We should not be focused on the possibility of failure, instead we should focus on the idea that we can be better representatives of God on the planet.
What does it mean to follow Green Deen?
Taking action on core principles that are deeply congruent with a love of the planet.
Follow these principles not only in our personal lives, but also within our wider communities, and promoting these communities into action.
Join with others to form a community that lives a Green Deen lifestyle, and one that treats the Earth like a mosque.
