John Proctor
-
Character Representation
-
”Proctor, respected and even feared in Salem,” (Miller 176)
-
Syntax
“Aye, but we did” (Miller 177). (Abigail)
“Aye, but we did not” (Miller 177) (Proctor)
Mary: "I only come to see the great doings in the world" (Miller 176)
Proctor: "Ill show you a great doin' on your arse one of these days" (Miller 176).
Proctor, when arguing, takes the statement of the other person and either flips it around on them or incorporates that into his argument.
“Be you foolish, Mary Warren? Be you deaf? I forbid you leave the house, did I not? Why shall I pay you?” (Miller 176)
Proctor tends to use repetitive and simple sentences when he feels particularly angered or frustrated in order to get a point across.
Diction
“But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind.” (Miller 177)
He makes it clear that he has absolutely no intention of reaching out to Abigail, claiming that he will cut his arm off before he reaches. He will not actually cut his arm off, this is just an exaggeration. He leaves no room for misinterpretation and is extremely direct in his statement.
“Is it the Devil’s fault that a man cannot say you good morning without you clap him for defamation? You’re old, Giles, and you’re not hearin’ so well as you did”(Miller 181)
Proctor starts with a rhetorical question and an exaggeration. Giles does not actually sue people for saying good morning to him, Proctor is simply using this exaggeration to show that Giles takes offense to everything. He gets directly to the point and says that Giles always mishears and sues people for slander without reason or proof.
Relationships
-
“Mary Warren, his servant, can barely speak for embarrassment and fear” (Miller 176)
Proctor’s command of respect and fear from people is evident by examining his relationship with his servant.
