Assessing Learning Needs
Behavioural Needs
Attitude
Make sure that they are motivated and enthusiastic, and if they are not, try to get to the bottom of why
They may have had bad learning experiences in the past that has made them unenthusiastic about learning now. You need to change that!
Ensure that they are punctual, well-presented, and aware of the responsibilities they have as a student and what is expected of them from staff members
Make sure that they are kind, professional and respectful of all members of the MDT, not just nurses
Feelings
Ensure they feel part of the team and are called by their name, not "student"
Make sure you are providing emotional support for anything they may have happening in their personal life that could affect their work
Ask what they are expecting of the placement, if they feel comfortable talking about any problems or asking questions
-
Confidence
Be sure to compliment the student on what they are already doing well and give constructive feedback on what they can improve on, rather than break down everything they do incorrectly
Ensure that you are building, rather than breaking their self esteem
Ask them about past experiences that they have had, get them to reflect about what they did well
Build a relationship with your student so that they can trust you and in turn will open up about any areas they do not feel confident in
Technical Needs
Physical environment
Show your student around the clinical area on their first day, to make sure they feel welcome and orientated to where they are going to be working
The clinical environment should be clean, safe, and compatible with learning
-
-
The environment should be friendly, welcoming, and cohesive for learning! The student should feel comfortable at work and in their environment
Skills and knowledge
Plan visits for your student so they can gain skills or knowledge that may not be available on your ward
For example, if a placement is on an outpatients' department but one of their OSCA's is to perform a handover, being able to accommodate this as best as they can
Sit down with your student and go through what they already know, what they need to know and what they want to know
Make a plan with multiple learning objectives; essential, desirable and possible. This gives the student known goals to work towards
Make sure they are aware of which skills are essential for them to learn and which ones are optional, and direct their learning appropriately
For example, they must be competent in a medication round but do not need to understand how to mix IV medications
-
What is a learning need?
A learning need is the knowledge gap between what someone already knows and what they need or want to know
These gaps exist due to lack of knowledge, competence or skill
