THW pay interns the minimum wage
Unpaid internship is only for the privileged
Not everyone can afford to work for free, which means that unpaid internship excludes the people who need social networking the most. Unpaid internships are a way to filter out poor people out of the skilled workpool. Students from wealthier homes may be able to afford unpaid internships and not have to worry about not receiving an income due to financial support of their families. Rich people who can do unpaid internships get ahead and get key positions filled with other people from privileged backgrounds(i.e politics, media). Hence the rich get richer.
workers are paid for their labour
Unpaid internships ruin the fundamental concept of fair exchange.
How it actually is supposed to be : when a person uses their time and effort to do your work, you should pay them back fairly in exchange for the work they have done for you.
However, in an unpaid internship, the concept of fair exchange is ignored. Some employers argue that unpaid interns are gaining more work experience, developing their skills, and might have potential opportunities in the future because of this internship so they don’t need to pay the interns. But anyone who works learns something while doing their work. Nothing should be substituting their well-deserved wages. Therefore, justifying their wages as their experience they have gotten or their developed skills through the internship is morally wrong.
