Intensive Farming
The increasing human population requires increased food yield. Therefore it is necessary to change and improve farming methods to produce food for the expanding populations.
Fertilisers
Fertilisers are chemicals that are added to soil to improve plant growth. Fertilisers also have different minerals added to improve plant growth. Nitrogen
Fertilisers also have different minerals added to improve plant growth. Nitrogen (N) for healthy growth of leaves, Phosphorus (P) for growth of roots and Potassium (K) for flower and fruit growth are elements required for the healthy growth and development of plants.
Some chemicals that are needed by plants in tiny amounts in tiny quantities are called trace elements e.g magnesium (Mg) for formation of chlorophyll.

Nutrient Cycling
The importance of Nitrogen. The air we breath consists of around 80% nitrogen gas, however, animals and plants are incapable of using nitrogen in this form. All living things need nitrogen to make protein.
Proteins contain carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O) and nitrogen (N).
Proteins are made of units called amino acids. Proteins are essential for the growth and repair of body tissues in all living things.
