GGJ2020-Repair - Elements of User Design
Motivation
Interest
I believe the game space boxes is interesting from the start of the game. I think that the world looks beautiful and encourages the player to explore the levels.
I also believe the mechanics encourage the player to experiment and find out new ways of using what is available to them.
I believe Space Repair also holds player interest with a sense of accomplishment for completing a puzzle
Rewards
I believe that currently in Space Repair there is a lack of meaningful long term rewards available in the game. As currently there is only the option to complete the level.
I believe that you could add a currency mechanic that awards the user currency at the end of every round. This could then be used to purchase cosmetics or other items. I believe that something like this would necessary to ensure users feel that they get rewarded for playing the game and feel motivated to continue getting better which will ideally in turn generate more short term interest in the game as the player would be more invested in their character.
I believe despite this Space Repair could also cultivate a sense of long term rewards through the players gradual improvement in skill by being able to complete increasingly difficult puzzles
Meaningful Choices
Strategy
I believe that Space Repair has a form of strategy in that the player needs to plan out what they are going to do with the objects available to them in order to solve the puzzle at hand.
Tactics
I believe that Space Repair shows tactics in how the player must choose to move the box and how the objects at hand can be used.
I believe that Space boxes has ambiguity between Strategy and tactics and that this isn't a bad thing as it creates a balance between the two and keeps the game interesting.
Aesthetics
Contemplative
There is a scene in the background and objects scattered throughout the levels that make the players contemplate the world and what has happened to the ship that they are on.
Sensory
There are a lot of beautiful lights and backgrounds in the game giving players a beautiful scene to admire. The Space-ship players play in is extremely cool and futuristic and I believe compliments the game well.
I believe that Space Repair has an extremely pleasing aesthetic style that immerses the player within the game.
Usability
Mastery
The game has a basic sense of mastery to work towards in being able to understand and complete the puzzles as well as completing the levels.
However, players lack a substantial goal to work towards in space boxes and may find it difficult to work towards mastering the game due to this.
Control
The game always shows the user a prompt when an action is available. The user can also gain a sense of understanding and better understand the controls after playing the game for a bit.
I believe that Space Boxes does a poor job in directing users on how to play the game for the first time. The game also fails in explaining to the user what the objective is and how they could potentially win or lose.
Balance
I believe that currently the pickup mechanic might be a little unbalanced and require some work to improve the balance of the game.
I believe that currently Space Boxes is a game that needs to balanced per level. This is because the game is a puzzle game and if a particular puzzle is unfair or setup in a particular way it could make the game extremely unbalanced.
