Classification of living organisms
Domain
archaea
archaea kingdom
eukaryote ancestors.
Their cell walls do not contain peptidoglycan and they have some of the same proteins that eukaryotes do.
Some are autotrophic but MOST are heterotrophic
They are called extremophiles because they can live in extreme environments
Archaea have been found in boiling hot springs, salty lakes, thermal vents on the ocean’s floors, and in the mud of marshes where is no oxygen
eukarya
fungi kingdom
eukaryote that absorbs nutrients from organic materials in its environment
unicellular or multicellular
Their cell walls contain a substance called Chitin :(provides support).
some are parasites ( grow and feed on other organisms )
other are saprobes ( get their nourishments from dead or decaying organic matter )
plantae kingdom
250,000 species are the Members of Kingdom Plantae which form the base of all terrestrial habitats.
All plants are multicellular and have cell walls composed of cellulose.
Most plants contain chloroplast ( for photosynthesis )
Most plants are Autotrophs, but some are heterotrophic ( extract their food from host plants through suckers like dodder plants that do not have green parts ).
ALL plants contain cells that are organized into tissues and MANY possess organs such as roots, stems, and leaves.
Plants lack motility ( like fungi ).
Some have reproductive cells that have flagella which propel them through water
Protist kingdom
are eukaryotic organisms that can be unicellular, colonial,
or multicellular.
Protists do not have organs and are classified into three different groups plant-like, animal-like, and fungus-like.
Plantlike are called algae such as kelp, are autotrophs
Animal like are called Protozoans such as amoeba, are heterotrophs.
Funguslike are protists include slime molds and mildews
Euglenoids are a type of protists that have both plantlike and animal-like characteristics, usually grouped with plantlike protists because they have chloroplasts and can perform photosynthesis
Animalia kingdom
ALL animals are heterotrophic, multicellular eukaryotes.
Animals do not have cell walls. And their cells are organized into tissues, and most tissues are organized into organs
Animal organs often are organized into complex organ systems
They live in the water, on land, and in the air.
MOST adults are motile some lack motility such as coral
Bacteria
Bacteria Kingdom
are members of both Domain and Kingdom Bacteria
Prokaryotes(Don’t have a true nucleus).
Cell walls contain peptidoglycan.
Diverse group that can survive many different environments.
Most bacteria are heterotrophs , some are autotrophs.
Some Bacteria are aerobic organisms that needs oxygen to survive.
