The Short Biography of St. John Baptiste de La Salle
Who is St. John Baptiste de La Salle
Family
born in Rheims, France, on April 30, 1651, to Nicole Moet and Louie de la Salle, a city of magistrate.
eldest of 5 brothers and two sisters.
His Lola influenced him greatly (read him the lives of the saints), and he started his seminary years in 1670.
In 1672, the parents of de la Salle died,
pursued his desire to be a priest and was ordained on April 9, 1678.
Beginning of his journey
concerned about the lack of schools and especially Christian oriented schools for the working class and the poor.
De La Salle was involved in helping Fr. Roland found the Sisters of the Child Jesus.
together with Adrien Nyel, they began to train men to open free schools for boys.
There was a big donation from De La Salle’s aunt to make sure that these schools would sustain themselves.
For the brothers today, it was the beginning of the founding of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (Fratres Scholarum Christianarum) – June 24, 1680.
De La Salle gave away his own material possessions and resigned his canonry
CRISES IN THE INSTITUTE
Brothers were either sick, dying, or were leaving (disillusionment?)
Some parish priests wanted to control the brothers.
The Writing Masters (a guild/group of teachers who ran schools for a fee) accused De La Salle that his free schools had some children who could afford to pay, thus should not be there.
Financial problems were a reality.
THE HEROIC VOW
De La Salle, together with two other Brothers, made a Heroic Vow on November 21, 1691
many young men from all economic strata joined De La Salle as Brothers for the work of Christian education.
De La Salle was one of the first persons in history to put students into larger organized groups and have them taught simultaneously by one teacher.
De La Salle reflected that if schools were to exist for the working class (who did not know Latin), the language of instruction should be in French – the common language.
De La Salle placed importance on founding Teacher Training Schools.
THE YOUTH AT RISK
De La Salle was also one of the first persons in history to have reform schools for young criminals found guilty by civil courts.
De La Salle originally had little idea of running Christian schools for the working class.
In the early hours of Good Friday, Friday, April 7, 1719, De La Salle died.
His last words to the brothers were: “I adore the holy will of God in my regard.”

PATRON OF TEACHERS
On May 24, 1900, the Catholic Church recognized the deep holiness of De La Salle and declared him Saint of the Church.
In May 15, 1950, the church recognized St. La Salle as a pioneer in educational innovation and made him the Church’s Patron of Teachers.
