Epidermis
Five Layers of Epidermis
1. Stratum corneum

Prevent the penetration of microbes and the dehydration of underlying tissues, Protection against abrasion for the more delicate, underlying layers

2. Stratum lucidum
Found only in the thick skin of the palms, soles, and digits

5. Stratum basale

Contain specific cells
Melanocytes
Producing the protein melanin which make pigment for hair, skin and retinas

Keratinocytes
An intracellular fibrous protein that gives hair, nails, and skin their hardness and water-resistant properties

Dermis
Two layers of Dermis

Reticular Layer: strengthens the skin, providing structure and elasticity.

Aprocrine gland: connected to the hair follicle and it secretes substances indirectly to the follicle
Adipose tissue: loose connective tissue composed of adipocytes. Its main role is to store energy in the form of fat, although it also cushions and insulates the body.

Langerhans cells: issue-resident macrophages of the skin. The immune cells capture trespassers such as bacteria and viruses and fight off injuries like cuts and scrapes.
