Social issues. What is wrong?
51.4% of young people in Barranquilla consider that their mental health has deteriorated due to the covid-19 pandemic (Jiménez, 2020)
Workers in the health sector, being in the first line of defense, suffer from mental health problems because they are exposed to traumatic situations and a lot of stress (Redacción Nacional, 2020).
42% of Colombians feel that their mental health was affected during the pandemic and isolation. This due to the economic pressure and the loss of social interaction (Redacción Nacional, 2020).
Iria Grande, Secretary of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry (SEP), points to the depression associated with the social situation generated by the COVID-19(Ruiz, 2020)
According to a report from the National Institute of Health (INS), more than 5,000 people tried to take their own lives and are mainly associated with grief, family estrangement, love breaks and the loss of loved ones by COVID-19 (Rojas, 2020) .
What has been done in this field already?
In Barranquilla, since the end of July, a gradual reopening of the different economic sectors began. This was to improve the mental health of many citizens who had been affected by isolation.(Velasco, 2020)
The Atlantic Secretariat of Health has set up the 3176218394 line to assist people who are emotionally affected by the pandemic and to provide Atlanticans with a channel of support heard directly. (ELHERALDO.CO, 2020)
In 2013, the World Health Assembly adopted a comprehensive action plan on mental health for the period 2013-2020. Under the Plan, WHO Member States commit to take specific actions to improve mental health.(OMS, 2018)
PAHO/WHO, along with its partners, is providing guidance and assistance to the Region of the Americas during the COVID-19 pandemic, to help support mental well-being .(OPS, 2020)
The feelings produced in people lead them to the use of liquor, tobacco and drugs. So the health minister has issued 13 recommendations for coexistence and mental health.
These data coincide with the report of the Ministry of Health regarding the populations that most attended the psychological counseling line 192, which between April and July received almost 10,000 calls from people seeking support. This is one of the strategies that the health portfolio has proposed to address the effects caused by confinement and other scenarios of the pandemic.
What will you do to approach this issue?
Promote virtual spaces that contribute to their physical health because people's physical and mental health are connected.
Creation of a blog where people can express how they feel anonymously and then provide emotional support for the problem.
Teaching meditation and relaxation techniques that help people connect with themselves.
Provide the service numbers authorized in Colombia for the care of mental health cases.
Encourage volunteer spaces, because according to studies being altruistic stimulates the brain's reward centers.
Encouraging distractions in terms of news related to covid-19 are key to emotional well-being.
Motivate the population to communicate with family and friends through social networks in order to interact virtually and not feel isolated.
Who would be interested in helping you and why?
Ministerio de Salud y Protección Social. They have a 3-year financing plan for actions that promote the mental health of Colombians (MinSalud, 2020).
OMS. Based on the report on COVID-19 and mental health from the United Nations, they consider that it is necessary to expand the coverage of mental health services and that they should therefore finance plans for this (OMS, 2020).
