Simple Past Tense
Use for express an activity completed in the past
Affirmative Sentences: They went to school The structure is: subject + verb (past tense) + object
Negative Sentences: They didi not go to school the structure is subject + did + not + verb + object
Questions: Did they go to school? structure is Did + subject + verb + object
Past Continuous Tense
Describe an action that was in procress at a specific point
in the past
Affirmative Sentences: He was playing soccer The structure is subject + was/were+ verb-ing
Negative Sentences: He was not playing soccer The structure is subject+was/were-not+ verb-ing
Questions: Was he playing soccer? The structure is Was/were + subject + verb-ing + object
Past Perfect
Is often used for an action in which started at some time in the past an is still continuing now
Affirmative Sentences: He had bought a skateboard The structure is: subject + to had + verb (past participle tense) + object
Questions: Had he bought a bike? The structure is Had + subject + verb (past participle) + object
Negative Sentences: He had not bought a bike, he has bought a skateboard The structure is: subject + to had + not + verb(past participle) + object
Active
Example: The boss hired a new secretary
The subject does something. we use active voice to say what the actor/ subject does
The structure is: subject + action + object
Passive
Example: A new secretary hired by the boss.
Something happens to the subject. We use passive voice to say what happens to the subject
The structure is: Object + verb to be + action
