Plitvice lakes
The Plitvice lakes are the oldest and the biggest national park in Croatia. It is located in Lika.
It became a national park in 1949.
Special characteristics of Plitvice lakes are travertines (which form travertine barriers and create lakes). Plitvice lakes received international recognition in 1979 when they were included in the UNESCO world heritage list.
Today it covers little less then 300 square km.
It is made of 16 named lakes and several smaller lakes. We divide them in upper and lower lakes.
Upper lakes:
Prošćansko jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko jezero, Malo jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino jezero, Gradinsko jezero, Burgeti and Kozjak.
Lower lakes:
Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod.
The park is opened
throughout the whole year.
Swimming is allowed only in certain lakes during summer.
There are 8 diffrent
tours to see the lakes and waterfalls. They also have 4 hiking trails.
The national park Plitvice lakes is full of fun
activities but the visitors have to follow some rules.
In the national park it is stricktly forbidden to:
collect plant material, and take any "souvenirs" of natural origin
feed animals
swim in most lakes
dump trash along the trail and anywhere else except in trash cans set up at specific locations in the park
move away from marked trails
Thanks to these rules, the park is clean regardless of all the people who come to see the beauties of Plitvice Lakes.
