Outcome 2: EN1-1A - Communicates with a range of people in informal and guided activities demonstrating interaction skills and considers how own communication is adjusted in different situations.
Activity 1: The teacher will read a beautiful Childrens story book, 'The Day You Begin' by Jacqueline Woodson. Students will analyse and discuss the text. Students are given the opportunities to share their stories with a partner or a group. The stories that the students will be sharing include a time where they felt proud/achieved something, favourite family time memory, a story about a journey they have taken.
Outcome 1: EN1-2A - Plans, composes and reviews a small range of simple texts for a variety of purposes on familiar topics for known readers and viewers.
Activity 2: Have students create a mind map, on a A3 piece of paper, with themselves as the centre to map the town identity. Students are to write or draw and should consider elements of self. Then in pairs students will view each other's mind maps.

Outcome 2: DAS1.1 - Performs dances demonstrating expressive qualities and control over a range of locomotor and non-locomotor movement.
Activity 1: Students will be shown photos of traditional Aboriginal artworks on the IWB and briefly discuss how our heritage or past can affect our identity. Students are given a A3 piece of paper to draw with and then, either using a mirror or photos, draw themselves on the piece of paper.

Activity 2: Students will be asked to choose a favourite folk dance. The students will explore the dance they have chosen, either in groups or individual. Students will create their own folk dances.
Rationale
Student's learning is in line with their Stage 1 Creative Arts and English KLA Outcomes and Content indicators. To learn about personal identity and what that means in a culturally diverse society. The activities designed through out this unit are designed to appreciate own identity, for students to better be able to understand and accept others.
General Capabilities
Composing texts through speaking, writing and creating. Word knowledge, visual knowledge, critical and creative thinking, personal and social capabilities and intercultural understanding.
Resources
IWB, A3 piece of paper, large classroom space, photos of traditional Aboriginal artworks, and drawing utilities, children's book 'The Day You Begin'.
Teaching strategies
EAL/D and gifted students are considered appropriately throughout the unit. Students who finish quickly with in activities will be given further research based work, to deepen their understanding and knowledge within the subject matter. Differentiation is incorporated within the activities and assessment in oder to support the teaching practices that meet the individual needs of EAL/D students. Group work is used to provide inclusion and equality for each student.
Assessment
To assess students learning with in this unit two models of assessment are used, formative and summative assessment. Class discussions, mind maps, observations, digital resources (formative). Reflection and criteria assessments (summative).
