Innovative differentiation strategy
Level 1 (5 students answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly.)
show them different pictures of the life cycle and ask the students to order the sequence
If they can finish the task and then ask them whether they can describe the whole life cycle of a butterfly
Provide them with different materials, and guide students to draw or paint or make a hand craft about the life cycle of a butterfly
Retell the process
If they cannot order in sequence, encourage them to do a role play about how a butterfly grow up, and help them identify different steps of the life cycle
Level 2 (12 students have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills)
Give instruction to these students and tell them what is "life cycle"
Watch a short video about the life cycle of a butterfly
Ask them whether they notice the different steps of a butterfly and what dose the butterfly look like in the different stage. I will provide them with some pictures through kahoot or provide them with models of the life cycle
If they could, I will teach them the term of each steps, and order these pictures
Level 3 (5 students appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the topic and need to be tested further for special needs.)
Students who are struggling with language
Give them a new assessment. When teacher ask them these questions they could use more simple sentence and use more body language. I also could ask them whether they could retell the process and use app to translate. I could use a voice translation app to check what the students are expressing and provide them with pictures about the key steps of the life cycle and ask them to order
If they still cannot finish the task, I will play a video about the life cycle of a butterfly in their mother language for helping them know the topic
Teach them key words about the topics
I will play the video, and pause if need, and highlight the key words with movements to help students understand. When students understand one step, teacher could encourage them to make a hand craft. When they finish the four steps, they will have four hand crafts. Finally, I will show them the whole process and ask students to make the process by using these crafts they made
If students could express the process in their mother language and order the pictures, I will each these students the key words of the main steps and use simple sentence to describe the process through using pictures and role play
Students who need special needs
If students have ADHD, teacher could use more movements and role play to encourage students to participate in activity. For example, using body to show different process of the life cycle. After showing one step, they could move to the table and make a hand craft or draw a picture about the step. Then they could move to the rug to do the next step.
If the student has autism, the teacher could redo an assessment. The special educator could be with the student. I would use more music to attract the student. The music or the music video should be related to the topic. When we here the music, I need to use some movements to encourage the student show me what she/he know about the butterfly
If it is hard to assess the student, I will tell the special educator my objectives, and discuss a way to check the student' prior knowledge
