Formative Assessment
Definition: Formative Assessments entails the process of gathering evidence of student learning and feedback to adjust instructional practices. Teachers are able to use this student feedback to enhance achievement to clarify misconceptions, slow the pace of the lesson, or provide an alternative teaching method.
Class Discussion: A class discussion is often a very quick, informal check for understanding throughout a lesson in which the teacher can quickly address misconceptions and see where students are struggling.
Exit Tickets: Exit tickets are a a great way to check students understanding at the end of class. Whether it be a 3-2-1 summary, quick write, or question over what they have learned, teachers are able to get quick feedback on their level of understanding.
Performance Assessment
Definition: A performance assessment entails a student carrying out or performing a task rather that the tradidtional multiple choice selection exam. It is more authentic and pertains to student knowledge, skills, and abilities rather than test taking skills.
Portfolio: A portfolio monitors student progress in which teachers are able to easily track a students growth throughout the duration of the course. Portfolios often include examples of student work.
Simple Individual Projects: Quick simple projects, such as a video of a student showing where the biomolecules are found in their food, demonstrate that student have mastered the content, however they may not be able to show that mastery on a traditional exam. This is great for differentiation.

Diagnostic Assessment
Definition: A diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment that serves to reveal the strengths, weaknesses, prior knowledge, and skill level of individual students. This help the teacher to provide clear, meaningful instruction, focusing on the areas in which students need improvement.
Unit Pre-Test: a unit pretest could be used for teachers to get an insight into where students are in understanding the material prior to a lesson. Students are also given a preview into what they should know by the end of the unit.
Diagnostic Reading Assessment: Often used to evaluate students needs for accommodation and other SPED services, diagnostic reading assessment test students phonemic awareness, phonic skills, and flunecy to see if they are on target for their grade level.
Summative Assessment
Definition: When you think summarizing, think standardized or of a summary. Summative assessments are typically used at the end of a unit or term to test students on what they learned. Summative assessments often account for a large percentage of the students' grades.
STAAR: STAAR or any end of course exams are summative as their purpose is to test students on what they have learned throughout and entire school. These tests tend to be very lenghty, heavily weighted, and standardized.
Research Project: A summative research project often take into account any preliminary data and analyzes it to reach a conclusion regarding the data.
