Formative Assessments
Define: An assessment to monitor students' process of learning. This allows teachers to get feedback immediately and allow them to make modifications to their instruction.
Students can complete a journal entry and the end of the day. Teachers could give the class a sentence stem and they complete it in their journals.
Think, pair, share is another great formative assessment. Students think about one thing they learned today, share that with a partner, and then share with the class.
Interim/Benchmark
Define: These are tests that are taken at different periods during the school year. These tests are administered usually at the end of a 6 or 9 weeks to monitor student progress.
State standardized testing: Tests administered by the state close to the end of the school year to test students' knowledge of the content they learned throughout the year.
District assessments: A test administered by the school district that students will take at the end of a period to cover information that was taught during those 6 or 9 weeks.
Summative
Define: These assessments are usually taken to determine student understanding at the end of each unit.

Book Reports: Book reports could be used to determine the students' comprehension about the book they read.
Diagnostic
Define: These types of assessments are taken before a unit begins. The reason students take these is to assess what they know and don't know so teachers can plan accordingly.
Running Records: Teachers could also using running records as a form of diagnostic assessment. This is used to determine students' reading capabilities for the teacher to group students appropriately.
Pre-assessment quiz: Giving students a short quiz that isn't graded before beginning a lesson will give you an idea of what the students know about that topic.
Performance
Define: Students aren't actually taking a written test for this assessment. This type of assessment involves students completing a task.
Science Fairs: This is a way for students to practice research, creating a project, and demonstrating it for other peers to learn.
Drama Act-Out: Acting out a play is a great way for a teacher to see if students understand the components of the drama genre. (Characters, scenes, acts, costumes, etc.)
