Assessments
Formative: A formative assessment is a way to assess students in order to get feedback on how you can modify or change specific instruction to better learning outcomes. These assessments have very low stakes, and are usually not taken for a grade.

Quiz: Students complete a quick impromptu quiz to give the teacher an idea of how well they are grasping concepts.
Summative: Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit. They have a high grade value.
End of unit test: Exams given at the end of a unit to assess student knowledge over a. period of time.
Final project/portfolio: Reflection of what the student has learned throughout the year or unit in their eyes. Includes writing and visual representations to show off what they know.
Performance: A performance assessment is a test that requires students to actually perform a task and not just select an answer from a pre-made question or assessment.
Act-it-out: assessing students retelling comprehension when asked to act out a story we have read in class.
Drawing a picture: assessing students knowledge by creating a drawing or picture of what they have learned.

Interim/Benchmark: These are assessments that help determine where students are in their learning and if they are on track to do well on future assessments.

MAP: an assessment in math and reading given in the beginning, middle, and end of year to track growth and student achievement.
Diagnostic: Diagnostic assessments are used as a pre-assessment where teachers can identify strengths, weaknesses, and knowledge/skills of their students before learning occurs.
Running Records: provides graphic representation of students' oral reading, identifying patterns of effective and ineffective strategy use.
KWL Chart: Students state what they know, want to know, and then what they learned. This is a great way to see what your students know before instruction and what they learned after.
