Interim/Benchmark

Example 2: TELPAS
Texas standardized text given to assess an English language learners knowledge of English in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments are a type of assessment used to see where students are at in their learning with respect to where they should be and help determine if students will do well on future assessments.
Formative
Example 1: Concept Map
Students will draw a concept map over the days topic, demonstrating their understanding.
Example 2: Exit ticket
Students will answer 1-3 multiple choice or free response questions related to what they learned that day.
Definition: A low stakes assessment that monitors student learning to provide on going feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. Formative assessments typically have little to no point value.
Performance
Example 1: Portfolio
Students will collect all assignments and projects completed over a topic or period of time and organize them into a portfolio to demonstrate their learning.
Example 2: Group project
Students will work together to complete a project over a specific topic to demonstrate their learning.
Definition: A performance assessment is a type of assessment where students demonstrate their learning through the performance of task rather than a pencil and paper test.
Summative
Example 1: Final Paper
Students will write a 5-10 page paper depending on the subject and topic. This will assess what the student has learned throughout the unit.

Diagnostic
Example 1: KWL Chart
Students fill in a three column chart. First with what they already know about the topic, then with what they want to know and finally with what they learned.
Example 2: Pre-assessment
Students will complete a 3-5 free response assessment over a topic or concept about to be covered. This will show the teacher achievements gaps and at what level they can begin instruction.
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are a type of pre-assessment that informs teachers of student achievement gaps and other academic abilities. The results from a diagnostic assessment can inform teacher instruction and how to meet student needs.
