Formative
Records evidence of student learning in order to provide feedback or adjust instruction. This is more frequent and not as formal as other assessments.

Interim/ Benchmark
Regularly scheduled, objective style testing that provides feedback and allows progress reports to be created. These are standardized and structured, but still provide a potential to improve learning.

Summative
Finalizes a semester or year, reviews all learned material, and allows teacher to create report cards. There is little to no feedback, because this type of assessment is not meant to improve the learning process.

Performance
Requires that a student use what he/ she has learned in order to produce something to display their knowledge

Diagnostic
Shows the abilities or inabilities of students, and can help plan future lessons or identify groups of students based on ability. Usually given at the beginning, before starting a class or unit.
