Initial plan of my EPQ- The effect of depression on cell growth rate
Introduction;
Starting point of my essay. The link between mental and physical health. (could be positive) Include at the end of the introduction...could poor mental health cause such a large physical impact on the body?
What topics i will bring up within my essay;
First paragraph;
Rough summary of how mental illness occurs.
https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/mental-health-causes-mental-illness#1
Who is the most susceptible?/ When are people most susceptible?. If possible quote from a researcher into when children are likely to develop mental illness.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3967083/
Adolescence on dopamine
End paragraph with rough explanation of depression. Link back to statement.
Second paragraph
chemicals involved in depression;
https://www.verywellmind.com/the-chemistry-of-depression-1065137
dopamine, Norepinephrine, Serotonin
How depression links to stress
So, how does this link to stress? As these chemicals are apparent to be imbalanced while an individual has depression... could these chemicals present also cause stress?
How stress hormones effect the body (in general, brief summary at the end to link into with next topic subject)
https://www.healthline.com/health/stress/effects-on-body#3
Third paragraph;
Introductory overview of the immune system.
https://www.msdmanuals.com/home/immune-disorders/biology-of-the-immune-system/overview-of-the-immune-system
Stress and stress hormones linking to the immune system's white blood cells;
'In addition, stress decreases the body’s lymphocytes — the white blood cells that help fight off infection. The lower your lymphocyte level, the more at risk you are for viruses, including the common cold and cold sores.
Then to finish off link back to the title
(Therefore the immune system as a whole. (Physical effects of poor immune system)?????? Does it link with my title and is it relevant
Fourth Paragraph;
If possible find a study linking participants with and without depression and compare effects on their immune system...this gives evidence that im proven correct… due to low white blood cell count
Fifth Paragraph;
Skin cells, rate of healing linking with stress.
'Does Stress Hinder Wound Healing? Psychological stress can extend the time required to heal wounds by 25 percent or more'
https://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/health-advice/2010/04/16/does-stress-hinder-wound-healing
growth hormones relationship with stress
Which then affects and proves increase/ decrease/ no link to skin cell growth
what is a growth hormone?
Is prolonged phycological stress different to everyday stress in affecting the growth hormones
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079864/
https://aboutmanchester.co.uk/can-stress-and-growth-hormone-be-related/
Does stress affect other cells in the body?
Sixth paragraph;
Find experiments for results on stress linking to skin cell growth rate, evaluate data and create my own graphs if possible
Conclusion;
Conclusion of does depression effect cell growth rate?
Prove correct. Main examples skin cells and white blood cells... however it isn't a direct cause due to stress being involved. Can have slow cell growth rate not due to depression
Ideas;
prove the statement right, not a question
