Setting Up the Room for Specific Activities: to create layouts of seating and desks that facilitate and encourage communication in some common activities.

Meetings, presentations and oral report backs.
Role plays and simulations set in offices, houses, and other buildings.
-
Avoiding chaos when rearranging the room: to change classroom seating arrangements with the minimum of disruption.
Using learners' ideas:
- Explain to the class that you would like to use a different seating arrangement.
- Have a brief discussion, making sure that you mainly listen to them and echo their ideas.
- Lead a short feedback discussion, then do the arrangement.
Effective seating arrangements: to seat students in ways that are most useful or effective than sequential or random placements.
Organizing learners in whole-class work:
- Language group: place students from different language groups next to each other.
- Language support: sit stronger students next to weaker ones.
- Differentiated learning: group learners by language level, sitting stronger students next to each other, and weaker students together.
- Friendships: sit wherever there is a remaining space.
- Learner-planned seating: ask learners to who sits where.
Organising random seating:
- Asking students to line up in an order.
- Asking students to meet up with someone they haven't worked with.
Getting students quickly into the right places: Draw a plan showing classroom seat positions. Pin this up on wall outside the room or just inside the door.
