Noble and gentry:

football - known to be violent, no rules, people would die playing it
Spectator sports
Elizabethans enjoyed watching competitions like wrestling and tennis, depending upon their class.
watched animals fight to death - all classes. large sums of money would be gambled on the outcome
Baiting
bear chained to a post and dogs unleashed against it, bears teeth broken short so couldn't bite the dogs, may were killed when it lashed out, careful not to kill the bear because they were expensive
so popular special areas in London were built to house them
all classes watched it and considered it a sport
bull baiting was also popular, most towns had a bull ring, fought to death as bulls weren't rare or expensive
cock-fighting:
cockerels made to wear metal spurs to attack each other
many places and towns had small arenas built for it
all classes bet on it and enjoyed it
disapproved by puritans because fights usually held on sundays = holy day
pastimes - literature
history was very popular with voyages of discovery and translations of Latin and Greek classics
poetry and plays
music and dancing
many people played instruments
upper class is lutes, spinets, harpsichords
lower class = bagpipes and fiddles
wealthy people employed musicians, men only and at feasts
music in churches, taverns, barbers and the streets
lower classes = fairs, markets or on public occassions
could buy books of popular songs
upper and lower didn't dance together, but did and it brought men and women together
