Step 1 - Teacher identifies
a struggling student
The teacher becomes aware a student is struggling.
Step 2 - Meeting with parents
Step 3 - Referral
Step 4 - Creation of the
student's IEP
Continued evaluation of student's
goals and achievements
student's progress is tracked and evaluated
allows for updates to be made to IEP if student continues to struggle, or does really well
offers feedback for the effectiveness of the IEP
enables goals to be updated depending on the student's performance
lays out what special education, support and service the student requires
not offered at private schools (government funded)
IEP lays out the accommodations the student requires
test accommodations: extended time on tests, eliminate some test questions, fewer multiple choice questions, etc.
classroom accommodations: preferential seating, paraprofessional, audio induction loop to be used, etc.
covers whether the student requires MRE or LRE
goals for the student should be discussed between a special education professional, the student's teacher and the parents. The goals can then be included in the IEP
Teacher is briefed on IEP and student's classroom requirements
Student is referred to special education professionals
Student is tested for suspected learning disabilities
tests disclose the student's strengths and weaknesses
Parents are notified of the results and advised on what options are available for their child's education
Parents are advised their child should be moved to a dedicated Special Education School or Most Restrictive Environment (MRE)
Individual Education Program (IEP)is created for the student
Parents are advised the student should be moved to the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
Teacher organizes a meeting with the student's parents
Teacher explains their concerns to the parents
Teacher works with parents to discuss the next best step
Recommends a referral to special education services
Parents need to consent to any further action
Teacher discusses student's short-term and long-term goals with parents
The student may have been struggling for a while, or the teacher could notice it immediately.
The teacher monitors the student to ensure the behavior is not a one off.
