        Third death occured: Michael Fairweather died, the Fisherman.
        
        Children are unbothered by the deaths and they note another one will die. Danny interrupts them and say these are all just superstition, he still does not understand that things on the island are different.
        
        Things did not get better after the three deaths.
        
        Fourth death occured: Marj Fairweather
        
        OVERVIEW- The start of Danny's misfortune: He becomes skeptical of the community's actions but still fails to realize that the superstition is real on the island. However, he feels that he is in trouble.
        
        When Danny knocked on Adel's house, Adel opened and says "Mrs. Poorwilly says [he is] to stay with [her] now" (Valgardson 327). This marks the first step of how the community will bewitch Danny. The protagonist is given a bride.
        
        "Nearly everyone is coming to see you tomorrow. They'll all bring something in the way of a present. It's a custom" (Valgardson 331). People started bringing Danny gifts when he succumbs to sickness. This marks the second step of the community's bewitchment with Danny.
        
        Danny gets better.
        
        Danny decided to take Adel to the homeland in order to marry her however, Mrs. Poorwilly tries to stop him because Danny is supposed to be on the island until he dies to save the community from the impending "bad luck".

        Second death occured: Sick Jack
      - "Good thing you're not going back with them" (Valgardson 315). Mr. Poorwilly's remarks towards Danny forebodes the imminent doomed fate the protagonist will receive. Danny does not question this therefore he thinks the remark mean no bad intent.
        
        "You'll see before the winter is out. Last month the radio said Emily died in the sanatorium. TB. Now Sick Jack's been failing Badly... After that everything will be OK" (Valgardson 317). The quote shows the first death already occured. Furthermore, Mrs. Poorwilly sounds optimistic of Sick Jack's impending death rather than being scared about it. It becomes evident that the community needs another person to die in order for everything to be OK. This forebodes the possibility that Danny's death could save them.
        
        "What you want is what those people had that I was reading about. They used to ward off evil by choosing a villager to be king for a year. Then so the bad luck of the old year would be done with, they killed him in the spring" (Valgardson 319). The protagonist ironic remarks foretells exactly what the community will do to him but he is unaware of this for now.
        
        "They gave their king anything he wanted. A woman, food, gifts, everything" (Valgardson 319). - reveals the chronological order of how Danny will be bewitched to stay on the island.
