Formative
Definition: The goal of formative assessments is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by teachers and students to improve their learning. Formative assessments help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work. They also help teachers identify students who are struggling and address the problem immediately.
Exit Tickets: Ask one simple question on the lesson in order to check student understanding
Concept Map: Have students draw a concept map of material from the lesson to demonstrate understanding
Interim/Benchmark
Given periodically throughout a school year to establish baseline achievement data and measure progress toward a standard or set of goals
DRA Reading Assessment: Reading assessment tool used once per quarter to evaluate student's reading level
iReady: Online test given three times per year to evaluate student achievement levels in both reading and math
Summative
The goal of a summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit. Summative assessments are generally based directly off of a standard or benchmark.
A final project: Students compile what they have learned through the entire unit or semester into one project, worth a lot of points
A final paper: Similar to the final project, students write a paper on a specific unit or on the material from the whole semester as a final.
Diagnostic
Diagnostic assessments assess prior knowledge. These assessments provide teachers with information about students' prior knowledge and misconceptions before beginning a new unit or to diagnose student strengths and weaknesses.
Diagnostic math test: Give a diagnostic test at the start of a unit to determine what students already know about the topic
KWL Chart: Chart that students can fill in what they already know, what they want to learn, and finally what they learned at the end of the unit or lesson
Performance
A form of assessment that requires students to perform a task rather than take a conventional paper and pencil test.
A play: Students work together to learn and perform a play on a topic
Making a model: Students make a model about a topic they have been learning about. For example, creating a model of the solar system for science class
