Carbohydrates and Lipids - Concept Map
Carbohydrates
Disaccharides (2 sugar units)
are produced when two monosaccharides are linked together by a condensation reaction releasing 1 water molecule. They are polar and soluble in water.
Maltose
Monomer is glucose
Lactose
Monomers are glucose and galactose
Sucrose
Monomers are glucose and fructose
Monosaccharides (1 sugar)
are the simplest types of carbohydrates. They fundamentally act as monomers to make larger and more complex carbohydrate molecules. They are polar and soluble in water.
Glucose
Fructose
Galactose
Polysaccharides (Many sugar units)
are larger molecules produced when more than two monosaccharides are linked together by a condensation reaction releasing water molecules equal to half of the number of sugar units. Not all polysaccharides are polar and soluble in water. These are very abundant and can be recognized.
Starch
Monomer is glucose
Glycogen
Monomer is glucose
Cellulose
Monomer is glucose
Lipids
Fatty acids
Triglycerides
Phospholipids
