rainforests, reefs, and mangroves
deep coral reefs
-
importance:
-
-little time to research importance, ecological roles and medical uses
-support a large biomass of slow growing fish with relatively slow reproductive rates. eg, orange roughy and blue whiting
threats:
-deep water trawling, over exploiting vunerable fish and killing a large amount of bycatch
-
-
-
-
-
-
shallow coral reefs
coral polyps:
-
consist of:
-
-
-
-
-hard, limestone coral exoskeleton (CaCO3)
feed by:
-
nematocysts:
-shoot out that anything that touches the coral, and pulls it into the coral mouth like a harpoon
-
zooxzanthellae:
-small, photosynthesising, symbiotic algae
-
-bleaching is when zooxanthellae leave the coral polyps due to sufficient changes in abiotic conditions
-
importance:
-although they only cover 2% of the ocean they are important supporting over 25% of all marine species
fisheries:
-coral reefs support exploited species including fish, crustaceans and molluscs
medicinal discoveries:
-many species dont have physical defences so they use chemicals that could be used as medicines in small amounts
-
-
-
-
-
-
tropical rainforests
-
high biodiversity:
-
-
-
-increased chances of finding usefull species for biomimetics, medicine etc..
-
soil maintainance:
-warm, moist conditions make dead vegetation decay quickly so nutrients can be reabsorbed by vegetation
-
-
-
-
-
-
mangroves
structure:
-
-
-inland:
-least ressistant to saline water and have knee roots that allow gas exchange in the oxygen poor sediment
features:
-
-
-adapted to survive in saline, anearobic and stormy habitats
-
-
-provide a habitat for a wide range of species (crabs, fish etc,)
-
-
-
-
-
threats:
-
-can be as high as 50% in some countries (india, phillipines)
mangrove clearing:
-seen as unproductive so used as farmland, settlements and infrastructure
-cleared for tourist development, shrimp farms, and salt farms
-
conservation:
-
-75% of mangrove lost in Sri Lanka, leftovers protected in 2015
