Eckels' Character Traits
Self-Assured
" Think...Every hunter that ever lived would envy us today. This makes Africa seem Like Illinois, " (Bradbury 1124).
Eckels was very focused on what other people would think of him, and this made him very aware of how he portrayed himself, and how much he wanted other people to be aware of how they portrayed themselves and how people perceived them.
" I've hunted tiger, wild boar, buffalo, elephant, but now, this is IT, " (Bradbury 1127).
This quote shows that Eckels is very confident by telling everyone on the safari that he has killed so many animals. Eckels did not have to list out all of the animals he had killed. He could have just focused on the task at hand.
Doubtful
"'I miscalculated, that's all. And now I want out,'" (Bradbury 1128).
"'We were fools to come. This is impossible,'" (Bradbury 1128).
Eckels also doubts the rest of the group and believes they were all wrong to go the hunt in the first place. he doesn't think the completion of the hunt is"impossible".
Eckels is in it over his head at first and it is not until he actually encounters what he has to hunt he doubts himself. He's ready to give up and leave because he's terrified of the dinosaur.
Foolish
"Eckels, not looking back, walked blindly to the edge of the Path, his gun limp in his arms, stepped of the Path, and walked, not knowing it, in the jungle," (Bradbury 1128).
This quote shows that Eckels is acting foolish by describing exactly what he is NOT supposed to do. He blindly walks of the path and messes up Travis' plan.
"Eckels, balanced on the narrow path, aimed his rifle playfully," (Bradbury 1127).
This quote explains how Eckels aims his rifle like a toy. The author describing him holding the gun "playfully" implies that.
Anxious
" Eckels' wayed on the padded seat, his face pale, his jaw stiff. He felt trembling in his arms and looked down and found his hands tight on the new rifle, " (Bradbury 1124).
" A warm phlegm gathered in Eckels' throat;he swallowed and pushed it down, " (Bradbury 1123).
Eckels was gripping the seat, was pale, and his arms were trembling. These are all signs of anxiousness. To be anxious means to be experiencing uneasy worriness about an unknown outcome. This is true in Eckels, he is about to go on a safari in time and one wrong move could change the entire future.
When Bradbury states that there in warm phlegm in Eckels' throat this suggests that he is not feeling well, which in turn could relate to the fact that he has anxiety about going on the safari.
