Supervisor meeting notes - 23rd Sept 2020
Kate, Mark and Derek all present
Next meeting on Tuesday
integrate feedback for the clay exploitation chapter draft and send to supervisors and to Maurice
They liked my idea of compiling a reference collection, mixing them up then getting them to test my fabric decision tree, so maybe actually do that for a laugh!
Discussed sampling outline and proposal draft
Too much unnecessary data; reduce to proportion and days
mix sampling is wrong term to use, replace with split sampling and say exactly what you mean by this underneath the table
Mixed feedback, the outlining and thinking through of ideas was good, but there were several parts that need to be rewritten to be clearer
Perhaps have two tables, with the second containing only the split sampling data
Include a paragraph clarifying why about 1000 samples is sufficient, namely be explicit in outlining stratified sampling for thin-section work once analyses are complete
Be wary of an 'exotic' fabric being too rare in the assemblage to sample statistically
Also outline why this is sufficient to meet project objectives
Stephen has final call over proposal, but Susan and Zosia must also be included and their opinions taken into account
Existing close liaison with Zosia is proving extremely valuable! Supervisors were very happy that I had discussed the mitigation measures with her before
Fresh breaks discussion
Use pliars instead on small or thin sherds
explicitly state that hammer and chisel work on thick sherds (which cannot be sampled with pliars) will target and cut across salient points to remove minimal material
Discussed car search
They were very understanding about the need for a new car, so get that sorted ASAP and get back to work
Discussed conversation with Maurice
Need to visit and sample white lias and Beacon Limestone locations to better understand the potential of each
Will include him in the mailing list once I submit chapter draft again
Discussed progress with RtR form
They seemed happy with progress, so get it done by middle of next week
New PGRs started today, so make sure to join office coffee and say hi when next possible
Also discussed differences between my fabric tree versions
Not sure they have quite understood the exact differences, but good enough at present
Talked about pXRF of Betts's fabrics and the similarities between sherds of apparently different fabrics
Have a play with their data and show them what I meant
