Chapter Ten- Sustainable Development
Renewable Resource
A renewable resource is a resource that can reform at a similar rate to or faster than we use them. E.g. Timber, Solar Energy and Hydropower
Finite Resource
A finite resource is a resource that isnt formed quick enough to replace the resource.E.g. Coal and Gas
Life Cyle Assements (LCAs)
1) Extraction of the raw materials
2) Processing of Raw Materials
3) Manufacturing of the products and packaging
4) Disposal of waste and by-products from the manufacturing process
5) Duration of use of the product
6) Disposal of the product after use
7) Pollution or Enviromental harm from use of the product
Sewage Treatment Process
1) The sewage is screened to remove large bits,e.g. twigs, plastic bags and grit
2) The sweage stands in a settlement tank to form a layer of sediment (heavier) and effluent (lighter)
3) The effulent is removed and treated by biological areobic diagram
4) The sediment is removed and treated by anaerobic digestion
5) The treated sediment produces methane (for energy)and digested waate (for fertiliser)
6) Additional treatments can include addition of chemicals, UV radiation or using membranes
7) The clean water is then released back into the enviroment
Potable Water
Potable is water that is safe to drink.Potable water isnt pure; dissolved impurities and still remain in the water.Pure water is odourless, tasteless and colourless compared to rsinfall or water from streams and wells as these harvpur chemicals such as acid
Desalination of Sea Water
Ways to reduce the use of our resource
Save Energy
Reuse and Recycle
Consereve Water
The Water Cycle
