Pros and Cons of Team Communication (Verbal and Nonverbal Communication)
Creates a Culture- The identity in a team is referred to a culture. It is developed by verbal and nonverbal communication. The culture can be good or bad based on the things said verbally, dress code requirements, standards and expectations.
Confusion- It can be confusing because of the various perceptions and understanding of each individual.
Empowers the Team- Words have the power to build up or tear down and when used for positive messages, a team will find themselves motivated and willing to go the extra mile and work through difficulties.
Not Personal- Every individual has various needs that should be addressed but it is impossible as the team need to be addressed as a whole and not one specific individual's needs.
Provides Clear Direction- give the group a good handle on vision and purpose, creating a sense of identity and motivation to achieve a common goal.
Types of Nonverbal Communication
Haptics- includes all forms of touch and very powerful.
Paralanguage- used to describe nonverbal, vocal messages. Example: tone, speed, pitch, volume, number, length of pauses disfluencies.
Territoriality- the use of space or objects to represent occupancy or ownership of something or somewhere.
Chronemics: Monochronic- get things done one at a time, time is scheduled, arranged and manages under this time system.
Polychronic- get several things done at one time. Focus on getting lots done instead of just one task.
Proxemics- use of space as a form of nonverbal communication.
Kinesics- study of gesture, posture, body movement.
Artifacts- We can protect our gender, role or position, class or status, personality, group membership or affiliation by choosing what we want to surround ourselves with.
Eye Language- tells our real emotion.
Appearance- can be used to develop judgements about people.
Environment- human generally feel better and do better when we are in an attractive environment.

Importance of Verbal Communication in Group Interaction
Provides Direction- verbal communication has the power to give clear direction and put a stop to the pulling in different directions.
Power of Persuasion- leader is given power to persuade the group to follow her beliefs or convictions.
Allows for Clarity-By verbally communicating, the leader is able to find the loopholes and misunderstandings and deliver a clear message.
Encourages Resolve- provide resolve in situations that may be in conflict. Allow the members to express their thoughts and feelings.
Gives Instruction-can increase productivity, increases the efficiency of the group or team.
Phases in a Group Discussion: Introduction, Central Group Discussion and Summarization
Collaboration/ teamwork- Group members begin to resolve their differences and appreciate other's skills and competence.
Execution/ Performance- Competency, attitude, and aptitude are well observed in this phase of the discussion.
Conflict/ Power Battle- Conflict and competition are at its peak.
Conclusion/ Closure- The group members enter this stage with a strong evolving decision.

Role of Participants in a Group Discussion
Question Mark
- Always question others. Sometimes irritate others by even questioning simple understood fact.
Aggressive
- Easily get annoyed and get antagonistic at times. Care less about other's points, sentiments, feelings and values.
Followers
- Agree and support other's point. Show agreement by nodding their head orother gesture.Generally do not score well as they do not show their significant points and logics and merely depend on other's views.
Stopwatch
- Focuses only the time has passed, how much time is left. Keen to maintain order and dignity
Fault Finder
- Intentionally find fault in everything others saying and criticize almost every point.
Audience/ Viewer
- Hardly speak and make any difference. Just see and listen what others are speaking.
Provocative
- Give orders to others,provoke others using irritating and high pitch voice.
Indecisive-
have a fickle mind, unable to express their ideas in organized manner. Gets emotional during conversation. Agree or disagree with anyone or everyone.
Born Leaders
- Do not have to put much effort to lead a team, able to manage the flow of discussion and give right direction.
Capturer
- Record every point what others are saying. Can be referred later on when someone has forgotten any points.
Moderate Referee
- Act as coordinator. Ensure all member gets sufficient time and chance to speak. A Good listener that stay calm during heated arguments.
The Settler
- Harmonizer and can find a mid-way of any problem. Avoid extremes and contribute in releasing tension when argument heats up.
Controller
- People who think all their saying should be approved by others.
Gist Maker
- Someone who summarized the entire discussion and draw some valid conclusion through the topic.
Clear Facts
- Few of the members will be data driven. Provide precise data and facts, support their statement with statistics.
Blockhead
- Does not take any initiative to present their views.
Starting Point
- One member who is confident enough to initiate the discussion (initiator), need to be extra conscious and active throughout the discussion.
