The Importance of Non-Verbal Communication
To agree/disagree
~ For example, nodding your head as a sign of your understanding.
Affirmation
~ When other member of the group is presenting his/her points, a simple nod could support the speaker gaining confidence in presenting.
Paying attention
~ If you maintain an eye contact, it will show that you are paying attention to what is being discussed.
Your Interest
~ Body language speak a lot whether you are interested in the discussion or not.
Convey emotions
~ Non-verbal communications tell a great deal about your present mental/emotional condition.

Environment
Workers feel better and do a better job in an attractive environment
It can shape the kind of interaction that takes place in it.
Appearance
You can guess people's attitudes by their clothing choice or other physical characteristics.
Artifacts
Include rings, tattoos, brand names and logos. For example, brands of clothes, car, handbags and watches.
Communicates something of one self such as gender, position and status.
Proxemics
Edward Hall stated that proxemics is the use of space as a form of nonverbal communication.
Intimate space (1.5 ft)
Personal space (4 ft)
Social space (12 ft)
Public space (24 ft)
Territoriality
The use of space or objects to represent occupancy or ownership of something or somewhere.
Similarities with Proxemics: Both use distance and space to communicate a specific message.
Utility: Both are very useful at expressing emotion and ownership.
Haptics
Includes all forms of touch.
Paralanguage
Para language is used to describe nonverbal, vocal messages
(Adler, Rodman, & Pre, 2013, pg. 182).
Chronemics
Monochronic
Monochronic time systems get things done one at a time and that time is segmented into precise, small units.
Germany, UK, USA, and Scandinavia are examples of Monochronic cultures.
Polychronic
Polychronic time systems get several things done at one time. A lot more fluid approach is taken to scheduling time.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, China, Mexico, and New Orleans are examples of polychronic cultures.
Kinesics
the study of gesture, posture and body movement.
Eye Contact
-They tell others how we feel.
You can NOT always hide your emotion.

It is important in a communication as to avoid misunderstanding that can be disastrous.
Helps a group achieve the goal of any discussion.

Gives Instruction
~ Instructions make a communication more effective.
Allows for Clarity
~ Communication is always the key to avoid misunderstandings.
~ If we express things verbally, people will be able to understand what we feel towards something.
Provides Direction
~ Verbal communication has the power of giving clear direction.
~ Especially when we are doing work in a group.
~ Group leader plays an important role.
Power of Persuasion
~ Verbal communication is able to persuade others.
~ For example, there is a communication theory called group think. It states that any particular group will slowly begin to think like one another until each member of the group thinks very much like every other one.

~ Verbal communication may help in resolving a conflict
~ When in a group, there will be a lot of conflict. Verbal communication helps the members to express their thoughts and feelings so that problems can be settled
