SAN topologies - Coggle Diagram
SAN topologies
- has a designation for level of functionality and connection type
-
- F, fabric port attached to a N port
- FL, fabric lopp port, connected to a HUB
- E, expansion port, connected to another switch using inter-switch link
- G, generic port, waiting to become E o F
device ports:
- N: node port attached directly to a FABRIC,
- NL:node loop port, device connected to HUB
-
- exist on a node, switch or director
point to point
(FC-P2P)
- inexpensive
- limited scalability
- guaranteed bandwidth
- storage decives directly to servers
2 nodes (N ports)
- decicated connection
- transmitter to receiver
- receiver to transmitter
switched fabric
(FC-SW)
is a generic interface between a node and the physical layer
- any to any & peer to peer services IN the FABRIC
-
arbitrated loop
FC-AL
private or public
- serial, full duplex data transfer
- for high perf. storage syst.
- server is connected to I/O devices through FC in Loop
- each port has TX and RX
- bandwidth is divided among all devices on the loop
(share same bandwidth)
- if no fabric connections no FL, Loop is private
- can accomodate 126 nodes NL_Ports
- if it has at least ONE fabric ONE FL Loop is public
- 126 NL_Ports & 1 FL_Port
depends on
- number of devices and
- capabilities of the SAN´s switches used
-
port types:
- B: bridge port, connect bridge devices with E_ports, provides a subsetof the E_port functionality
- D: diagnostic port
- EX: cx FC router & FC switch
- TE: extended inter switch, trunking E_port
- Auto: can become, E, TE, F, FL as needed
- Fx: can become F when cx to N_port, OR FL when cx to NL_port
- GL: operate as E, FL, F. found on QLogic switches
L: anyarbitrated Loop port, FL or NL
U: universal, found only on Brocade switches
when a new link between ports, 3 questions:
- do you suport loop functions ?(Loop initialization process LIP)
- do you support 24bit addressing ?(Fabric Login FLOGI)
- send link service frames to establish and E connection?
