Imagination in The Adventures Tom Sawyer
Chapter 1
In chapter one, at the dinner table, Aunt Polly questions Tom about skipping school to go swimming. He says that his collar is still sewn from the morning so he would not have been able to take off his shirt to swim. He ended up resewing his collar and got caught because he used a different color of thread. He uses his imagination to get our of responsibilities and create trouble.
Chapter 2
In chapter two, Tom gets in trouble for wrestling a boy that he didn't like. As a punishment he has to white wash a fence for his Aunt Polly. As his friend Ben walks by he convinces him that white washing the fence would be fun, so Ben gives Tom an apple so he can white wash the fence too. By the end of the day many kids had given him random toys to be able to help as well. Tom did not have to complete his punishment but swindled kids into doing it for him. I believe that not many people would think to do that, Tom shows creativity and imagination in this way.
Chapter 13
After witnessing Dr. Robinson's murder and taking a blood oath, the boys decide to run away to an island and become pirates. They fear that they will be killed by Injun Joe if they stay in town. I know most kids would not think to leave home and live by themselves at such a young age and jump to the conclusion they will die. I think the boys were all very imaginative and all egged each other on.
Chapter 17
The boys know that the town is looking for them after they believe they all drowned. Instead of going back home they decide to wait and after a storm wrecks their camp they head back to town. They walk into their own funeral service to look and feel like heroes. This displays their thought process which if they show up at their funeral they will be praised and they will all be happy to see the 3 boys alive.
Chapter 8
In chapter 8, Tom is walking in the forest playing by himself and he decides that he is a pirate. He tries to find his stolen marbles and comes across Joe. The boys play pirates for a while and decide that they would rather be outlaws in the forest then be the president of America. They boys show imagination in this because they escape reality together and get lost in a fantasy world.
Chapter 25
Tom and Huck are bored and decide to look for treasure. They go to the nearest dead tree and start digging everywhere around it. They are unable to find the treasure and Tom thinks it is the witches fault that they can not find it. They decide to go to a haunted house but go on Friday, which is the most ¨unlucky day of the week¨. They pretend to be Robin Hood for the day. These boys show many examples in the book how they use their imagination to escape the stress of reality. Injun Joe had escaped and to take their mind off of it they went to find treasure.
Chapter 18
In chapter 18, Aunt Polly scolds Tom for letting her think he was dead. He apologizes and said he had a vision of everything he saw and heard when he crossed the river. He said every detail to a T and Aunt Polly thought it was a miracle and forgave him. No kid would think to say that to get out of trouble. Tom became more and more creative and outsmarted many people throughout the book.
