- - - - Favela: Definition- A favela is a type of housing infrastructure that is represented by a community that was built without government oversight. Favelas are significant because they are a great example of the negative effect of primate cities, and what happens when a government is not as involved with its citizens. There are both positive and negative aspects that come out of this issue; the negative being that the new law enforcement system is run by gangs, and with this comes drugs and violence. The positive aspect is that the residents are forced to be more resourceful and make the most of what they have, which creates an unintended reality of creativity and innovation.
    - - Vancouver: Vancouver is a major city in western Canada, located in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia. It is also one of Canada's densest, most ethically diverse cities. Vancouver is significant in relation to urbanization because there was a prominent example of gentrification in Vancouver. Since the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver was experiencing hardships, the city tried to revitalize the area in the 1960’s. However, due to the closing of Woodward's department store, the area developed a high unemployment rate, poverty, homelessness, crime, and drug use. Also, low-income small businesses like family-friendly restaurants were diminished, and low-income housing was severely depleted. This caused many people to lose their homes, and created mass amounts of poverty.
  - - - Brain Drain (Impacts on Rural Areas): Definition- Brain drain is an impact on rural areas that comes from rural to urban migration, and it is when intelligent and hopeful people from rural areas (typically of younger age) move to urban areas for educational opportunities and better pay. Brain drain is significant because the rural areas start to have a lesser probability of success and innovation, which can cause lifestyle struggles and problems because the infrastructure is not up to date.
  - - - Impacts on Urban Areas: An impact on an urban area is a strong effect on that specific area due to the cause of migration. The main impact on urban areas from migration is the challenges to infrastructure due to the rapidly increasing population. This is significant because it means that there is not enough carrying capacity to hold the population, and there are struggles with urban planning.
- - - - UNHCR: The UNHCR is an organization that helps rescue and protect refugees around the world. UNHCR stands for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. They provide refugees with food, water, shelter, education, medical attention, and other services. The UNHCR is significant because the organization is taking crucial steps to improve the state of the refugee crisis around the world. For example, they opened a refugee camp in Rwanda to help refugees fleeing from Burundi. The camp has welcomed over 60,000 refugees as of 2019, which is helping many people have a better life.
      - Syria: Syria is a country in the Middle East. It is officially located in the the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon to the southwest, the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. It is significant because the largest refugee and displacement crisis of our time is currently taking place in Syria. The crisis is now on its 10th year. About 5.6 million Syrians are refugees, and about 6.2 are displaced within Syria. We need to know about refugee crisis like this one so that we can find out how we can help!
      - Mexico: Mexico, officially the United Mexican States, is a country in the southern portion of North America. It is bordered to the north by the United States; to the south and west by the Pacific Ocean; to the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and to the east by the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico is significant in relation to immigration because there are many people that have come to the US from Mexico in order to find a better life. They are moving because Mexico has economic inequality, rural poverty, and significantly lower wages. This situation is very politically controversial, because the government must decide what should happen to all of the immigrants, specifically the undocumented ones.
      - Arab Spring: The Arab Spring was a movement in the early 2010's that occurred in Middle East and started in Tunisia. Awareness was spread through cell phones by repressed people who were under dictatorships. The goal of the people was to rebel against their governments because of the low standard of living in their countries.This led to a series of anti-governmental protests, uprisings, and armed rebellions. However, this caused many of these people to become internally displaced, which is a form of migration. This event is significant because it gives a relevant example of the power of the people, and how working together can benefit everybody. It also shows the power of technology in our world, since these people were able to make a difference using their cell phones.
- - - - Per Capita: Per capita means per person, or for each person. It is significant and important to know in relation to globalization and global supply chains because many statistics in this area use "per capita" to calculate and describe how much of a supply must be made, processed, or manufactured. It is also used frequently to talk about people in general.
      - Container Ship: Container ships are cargo ships that carry all of their load in truck-size containers, in a technique called containerization. They are a common means of commercial freight transport and now carry most non-bulk cargo over the oceans for the means of trade. Container ship capacity is measured in twenty-foot equivalent units. They are important because container ships are how the products physically get to different places, and the system would not be possible without them.
        
        Choke Point: A choke point is a narrow passage or strait that connect two bodies of water. They are places where many container ships travel through. One example that I learned about. is the The Strait of Gibraltar. Choke points are significant because they are a big part of how container ships arrive at their destination. They also greatly affect the people who live near the straits because of the constant political arguments about the passages.
      - Creative Destruction: Creative destruction is the incessant product and process innovation mechanism by which new production units replace the outdated ones. Creative destruction is significant because it plays a great role in the spending of economies globally. This is because it is constantly needed to provide necessary items to trade to other countries in order to make a positive profit.
  - - - Scarcity: Scarcity is when there are not enough goods and services in a specific area to provide for the population because that certain good or service cannot be produced. An example is that bananas can't grow in Colorado, so we import them from Brazil, where bananas are able to grow because of the warm and humid climate. Scarcity is significant because it determines what each region of the world needs to import in order to support the people that live there.
      - Specialization: Specialization is when a country will specialize in making something that they are good at or that they have extra of. This gives them a comparative advantage over other countries, because they have the most of this certain product. Specialization is significant because it is an advantage in trading that is decided right away, and it can't change. It is the root of where trading starts, so it is needed in order to understand trading as a whole.
      - Comparative Advantage: Comparative advantage is when a country trades something that they are better at making than everyone else, or something that they specialize in. This term is significant because it is how many countries make the money that they have, and it can be a reason why their economy may be stable or unstable.
    - - Capital/Investment: Capital is another example of something that can be traded between countries. It occurs when a company or individual buys something in another country. Examples include buying new branches of a company or a second home in another country. Capital trade is important to learn about because it is a crucial part of both geography and the stock market. The stock market plays into money management when you get older, and money management is an important skill to have.
      - Goods: Goods are another example of something that can be traded between countries. Goods are tangible things, like clothes, food, and cars. They are also the most obvious type of trade. Goods are significant because most of the things that we use in our lives are goods. If you think about it, every food we eat and every other tangible thing in our homes is a good. Our lives would not be the same without these things!
        
        Commodity: A commodity is a raw material or primary agricultural product that can be bought and sold. One example is the chocolate that comes from Cote d'Ivoire, but only before it has been processed and manufactured. Commodities are important because they are the first step in the global supply chain. The workers also put lots of hard work into providing commodities, even though the commodity providers get paid the least.
        
        Fair Trade: A fair trade minimum price acts as a safety net for the price of commodities when it lowers. It is the minimum price that the goods can be sold for. Fair Trade is important because it can help sustain a reasonable standard of living for the low income working community that produces commodities like cocoa. For example, Fair trade premium increases income in cocoa farms, and can be used to invest money in their community. For example, it can be used for a school, health center, or to improve the condition of women in the communities.
      - Services: Services is an example of something that can be traded between countries. Services are not tangible objects, as they involve jobs and work. Common examples include legal, satellite, and banking services. Services are significant because they are used in our everyday lives, and it is important to be grateful for where they came from. Colorado provides ski vacation services to travelers who come to the Rocky Mountains.
    - - Imports: An import is a good or service bought in one country that was produced in another. The buyer of these goods and services is an importer. In the US, the places that import most of our goods are China, Mexico, and Canada. Imports are significant because it is important to know where our resources come from, so we can be grateful to the places that gave them to us, since our life wouldn't be the same without them. Imagine life without the chocolate from Cote d'Ivoire!

Mexico is the biggest source of all agricultural imports for the U.S, including many fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, wine and beer, snack foods, and processed fruit and vegetables.
        
        Canada: Canada is a country in the northern part of North America that shares borders with the United States and Greenland. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean. Canada is significant in relation to globalization and trade because we get many imports from Canada (since it is a neighboring country to the United States). Imports from Canada account for about 12.5% of overall US imports. The top import categories are mineral fuels, vehicles, machinery, and plastics.
        
        China: China is a country in East Asia that is officially called the People's Republic of China. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of around 1.4 billion people. China is significant in relation to globalization and trade because we get many of our imports from China. The top imports include electrical machinery, machinery, furniture and bedding, toys and sports equipment, and plastics, each costing the US billions of dollars.
      - Exports: An export in international trade is a good or service produced in one country that is sold into another country. The seller of these goods and services is an exporter. Export of goods often requires the involvement of customers authorities. Exports are significant because it is important to know what the work in our country is doing, and how it will help other people. For example, the top exports in the US are food, beverage, and feed, as well as crude oil, fuel, and other petroleum products. These exports go primarily to our neighbors, Mexico and Canada, and also China.
