Definition: Cities that tend to be the economic capital of an area.Significance/Example: Many people are moving into urban areas, increasing the population and giving people more job opportunities, better healthcare, and education. Urban areas are cities filled with people and has its own infrastructure required to operate. I learned that urban areas have been gaining more population as people are leaving rural areas.
Definition: Countrysides that are not highly populated. Significance/Example: Many people are leaving rural areas to go to urban areas, so the population is decreasing in rural areas. I learned that people decide to leave the rural areas for better jobs and more income potential.
Definition: An area for neighborhoods on the outskirts of a city. Significance/Example: New neighborhoods are being created outside of cities, and people are moving to live there. People are leaving cities, and building or buying houses near the city. Boulder is an example of a suburb, for it is a suburb of Denver. I learned that suburbs are gaining in popularity as people seek more space and larger homes.
Definition: The base physical and organizational pyramid of a city. Significance/Example: Most of a city depends on its infrastructure, and without it, cities could not run. Sewer systems are examples of infrastructure in a city. I learned that without proper infrastructures in place, cities would be be able to run properly.
Definition: A city with a total population at least twice that of the second largest city in the country. Significance/Example: These very large cities attract a lot of people that are migrating. They are often economic capitals in the area. I learned that primate cities attract people because there are more jobs and opportunities.
Definition: A city with a total population of 10 million or more people. Significance/Example: Similar to primate cities, these attract many people who want to move into a city. An example is Tokyo, Japan. I learned that megacities attract many people because there are more jobs, housing, and opportunities there.
Definition: People with a better education leave rural areas to go to larger urban areas in hope of getting a better job. Significance/Example: This is leaving rural areas with fewer people and causing urban areas to gain more people. It also causes rural areas to have less educated residents. I learned that the brain drain can be devastating for rural areas as they are losing key contributors of their society.
Definition: Towns in Brazil built without help from the government and many of them without much law enforcement.Significance/Example: Many people live in these favelas, and they are growing urban areas. I learned that people learned to create these cities on their own because they were poor and could not afford to live anywhere else.
Definition: Fixing or making an area much better, in looks, wealth, and people than it used to be. Significance/Example: Many towns have been “gentrified” to try and fix the economy or other issues in the area. Vancouver is a heavily gentrified city. I learned what gentrification is, and how it has occurred in various cities.
Definition: Immigrants who immigrated into a country legally, with all the documents or other things required by law. Significance/Example: As people are immigrating out of countries, it is important that they try to do it legally, with all the needed documents. I learned the difference between immigrating legally and illegally.
Definition: An immigrant who immigrated into a country illegally, by entering the country without being inspected for the proper documents first.Significance/Example: Some immigrants are immigrating into countries illegally, which can be an issue. It is important that they immigrate legally. I learned the difference between an undocumented immigrant and a documented immigrant. Undocumented immigrants do not always have the same access to government aid.
Definition: Person who abandons their country due to fear of being killed due to their beliefs, religion, or race. Includes people running from conflicts. Have some rights under international law. Cannot be returned to dangerous places they left and can keep their family together. Significance/Example: There are many refugees out in the world and it is important that they all get these rights, for if they don’t they can be killed. I learned the difference between a refugee and a migrant.
(Migrant)Definition: Person who leaves their country to go to a different country for jobs, schools, etc. Different from refugees because they are not running from or getting killed in their home country. Significance/Example: Many migrants looking for more work opportunities or better education, which can help cause big cities to grow even bigger. I learned that migrants and immigrants are different.
Definition: Protection granted to people that were forced to leave the country they previously lived in by a different country. Significance/Example: People that are leaving their home countries due to violence need protection so they can live in a different county without living in fear. I learned what asylum is in terms of immigration, and it is not always granted by countries.
Definition: The United Nations Refugee Agency. It is an international organization that protects refugees wherever they are located. Significance/Example: There are many refugees out in the world and it is the UNHCR’s job to protect all of them, no matter where they are. I learned what the UNHCR is, and that it is their job to help refugees all around the globe.
Definition: Person who goes to live in another country permanently. Significance/Example: There are many people looking for a better place to live in a different country. I learned the differences between migrants, immigrants, and refugees.
Definition: South of Turkey, in Middle East. Many immigrants fleeing Syria because of the civil war, for they do not want to be killed. Significance/Example: People are fleeing Syria to avoid being killed in their hometowns. I learned why people are fleeing Syria to places like Turkey.
Definition: Not as many jobs, lack of health care and education. Significance/Example: Just like the push factors, it contributes to the growth of cities and decline of people in rural areas. I learned why people are being pushed out of rural areas and moving into urban areas.
Definition: More jobs, better education, more health care, family ties, excitement. Significance/Example: This all contributes to the rapid growth of cities around the world, and the decline of population of people in rural areas. I learned why people are being pulled into living in an urban area and that people are tempted to leave the rural areas for more opportunities.
Definition: The number of people an environment can support. Significance/Example: If the population exceeds the carrying capacity, the city will not be able to operate. The carrying capacity relies on the infrastructure. I learned that there could be significant consequences to a city if the carrying capacity is exceeded.
Definition: City in Canada that was a heavily gentrified city. Significance/Example: This is an example of what can happen when a city is gentrified. It turned the city into a better place for some people, but worse for others. Some citizens were forced to leave because they could not afford housing. I learned how gentrification can be both positive and negative.
Definition: South of the United States, one of Americas biggest trading partners. Also many immigrants trying to come from Mexico to the United States.Significance/Example: Many of the immigrants coming into the United States are from Mexico. I learned that Mexico is one of the United States' biggest trading partners.
Definition: North of the United States, one of United States' biggest trading partners. The United States exports the most goods to Canada.Significance/Example: The United States exports the most goods to Canada, so Canada is an important trading partner for the United States. I learned that we trade many goods with Canada, and that is where most of our exports go.
Definition: South of Mongolia, the most populated country in the world, one of the United States' biggest trading partners. The United States imports the most goods from China.Significance/Example: Many of the goods in the United States are imported from China. I learned that we depend on China for a wide variety of imported goods.
Definition: How countries and people interact and integrate. Significance/Example: Trade, politics, and culture. I learned what the definition of globalization was, and how it affects many things in our everyday life.
Definition: When someone/a country is better at making something than everyone else. Significance/Example: When someone is better at making something than everyone else, so people buy from them. Some countries are better at making things than other places, so they specialize in it and make the most money off of it.
Definition: When there are not enough goods to go around. Significance/Example: People trade because if there is not enough of that item to go around, and they want those items, they trade for it. I learned that the fact that there is not enough items to go around is a large factor in why people trade.
Definition: When a country specializes in something they are good at to make money. Significance/Example: Some countries and places specialize in specific goods or services if they make money off of it. Colorado specializes in skiing since they can make money off of it. I learned that some places specialize in certain goods or services to make as much money as possible.
Definition: Services traded (ex: legal services, banking services). Significance/Example: Legal services and banking services are examples or services that can be traded. I learned that services, and not just goods can be traded.
Definition: Items traded (cars, televisions, etc). Significance/Example: Items traded, such as cars or televisions or basic items like those. I learned that there are more than just goods traded.
Definition: Final product of something made all over the world.Significance/Example: An iPhone is an example of this. Goods have pieces that come from and are produced from all over the world, until they are created into a product in a different place. I learned that my phone and goods like that are from a global supply chain.
Definition: Raw materials that can be bought or sold. Significance/Example: The cocoa beans grown on the cocoa trees are a good example of this. They are then sold to other places. Oil is also another example of this, and without these basic commodities, we would not have much of the items we have today. I learned that many of our items were created from commodities bought from other countries.
Definition: Removal of established processes to have space for improved production methods.Significance/Example: Allows for factories to improve their production methods, and find more and more efficient ways to create more items. I learned that creative destruction is a concept and exists to help factories to adapt to more efficient ways to make items.
Definition: The buying and selling of goods, services, and capital/investment. Significance/Example: Trade is an important part of globalization, and without trade, some items in our houses could not be there. I learned how much our society and economy relies on trade with other countries.
Definition: Capital/investments traded (investing money in a facility to build more goods, Chinese person might buy property in the United States).Significance/Example: It is an investment of capital to build a facility which will then in turn build more goods with the hopes of making more profit. I learned that not only goods can be traded, but also capital and investments as well.
Definition: How people and countries interact and integrate. Significance/Example: Trade, politics, and culture. I learned what the definition of globalization was, and how it affects many things in our everyday life.
Definition: Trade between companies and producers where fair wages are paid to the producers.Significance/Example: This allows the lower class workers to get paid a reasonable living wage, without having to work extra, meaning they can afford to pay for their children's school and other necessities. I learned that the fair trade rule can ensure better work conditions and a better wage for workers in developing countries.
Definition: Per person. Significance/Example: Helps to measure the total GDP/Gross Domestic Product of an average person in a country, which can depend if they benefit from globalization or not. GDP is the total value of goods and services in one year. I also learned what per capita actually means, which is per person.
Definition: The exports minus the imports of a country. Significance/Example: The United States imports more than they export, so they have a negative balance of trade. I learned what a balance of trades was, and how it is significant and can help the economy.
Definition: Goods/Services/Capital bought from other countries. Significance/Example: Imports from another country can allow a country receiving the goods to get items they could not get in their own county. I learned that imports, similar to exports, are large parts of trade and globalization.
Definition: Goods/Services/Capital sold to other countries. Significance/Example: Exports to other countries help people there get items that they cannot get from their home country. Trading these exports allows them to get their hands on items. I learned that exports are a huge part of trade and globalization.
Definition: Ship designed to carry goods in containers. Significance/Example: These ships are large parts of trading, since it is the main way of carrying goods overseas. They are also very efficient ways to transport goods. I learned how much world trade depends on container ships.
Definition: Narrow passage/straight that connects two bodies of water. Significance/Example: Usually these choke points are busy with ships constantly going through them, and much of trading over sea relies on these straights, more specifically, container ships. An example is the Straight of Hormuz. I learned how important these choke points are for trading.
Definition: The rich and middle class benefit from globalization. Significance/Example: The large companies and the middle class people benefit because the large companies are able to make money off of things such as the chocolate. The middle class benefits because they get access to items like the chocolate in grocery stores near their houses. I learned that while large companies like the chocolate ones benefit, other people who are not as lucky as us do not benefit from globalization.
Definition: The low class people are losers from globalization. Significance/Example: Many workers, such as the ones on the cocoa plantations are not paid nearly enough for the work they do, while the richer companies and people buying the products benefit. The workers then have to produce more cocoa to get paid a reasonable wage. I learned that while globalization may benefit us, it does not benefit everybody.

Definition: Social movement in Libya/Algeria for democracy causing some dictators to flee. Significance/Example: People drove out dictators because they wanted democracy. I learned that the masses found inspiration in gathering together and fighting for their beliefs.
