Immigrant describes someone who has migrated from another country.
Documented Immigrant describes a immigrant who has legal documentation to be in the country.
Push factors: something that makes people want to leave a certain place
Pull factors:something that makes people want go to a certain place
Undocumented Immigrant describes a immigrant who does not have legal documentation to be in the country.
Rural: A large area with low population
Urbanization
Favela: A slum outside Brazils largest cities.
Gentrification;Improvement of run down low income areas.
Infrastructure: Basic structural and physical needs of a system.
Megacity: A city with a population exceeding a million people
Primate City: The largest and most important city in a country. Often the capital city.
Urban: Large population built up city areas.
Rural: A area that is not urban, has low population and few homes or buildings, often farmland.
Carrying Capacity: How many people a land can support based on use and supply of resources
Winners from globalization: People or business that benefit from world wide trad. For example, big companies like Walmart and their consumers who want cheap goods.
Losers from globalization: The people or places that do not benefit from global trade. For example, people without skills in poor countries work long hours for low pay in poor conditions.
China: One of the US's top trade partners. We import most stuff from China. Asian superpower country.
Global Supply Chain; All the steps across the world that go into getting a good or service from the creator of it to the buyer of it.
Comparative advantage;: A company is able to supply goods or services at a cost lower than its competitors.
Mexico: Country to south of US. One of US's top 3 trading partners. Source of legal and undocumented immigrants.
Canada: Country to the North of the US. It is one of the US's biggest trading partners . We export the most goods to Canada.
Fair Trade : A type of trade that promotes businesses that are small, worker owned and provide fair wages and safe working conditions.
Container Ship: Ships that carry goods in standard size containers. These ships have encouraged global trade.
Creative Destruction: A process where something is destroyed and out of that end something new is created. Like steel mills closed in the US but were then built in China.
Choke Point: A narrow point in a navigable waterway. Usually these points get a lot of ships carrying goods.
Capital/ Investment: Money put into a business to get it started or to expand it.
Balance Of Trade: The amount made by exports minus amount spent on imports.
Commodity: A good that is interchangeable with other similar goods
Arab Spring: An anti-government movement that began in Tunisia in 2010. This opposition to poor standard of living and oppressive governments spread throughout the Arab world.
Goods: Services or products that are used by people.
Export: Goods or services made in one country and sent to a buyer from another country.
Import: A good or service made in one country and bought by another country.
