In 2012, people in the Middle East and North Africa tried to overthrow the government causing lots of unrest.
Before learning about the Arab Spring in class I didn't really know what it was since I had only started reading the newspaper and paying attention to news recently. This event was significant because it showed how social media can be used to organize large protests.

Commodity
A raw, unprocessed material that is bought and sold at the beginning of the supply chain. E.g. Cocoa beans, gold, coal
This term is significant because without commodities, the production of goods would be impossible.
Comparative Advantage
When a country has a trait that makes them the best at producing a certain good. E.g. Bananas are easier and cheaper to grow in Mexico.
This term is significant because when a country has a comparative advantage in producing a certain good, they can make a lot of money off of producing that good.

Fair Trade
Fair Trade is the organization that never pays the workers at the beginning of a supply chain lower than a certain amount no matter how cheap the product gets.
This term is important because if people know that fair trade certified products don't exploit their workers, maybe people will chose fair trade products over others.

Merchandise/ products
This term is significant because goods are a major part of trade and are important to the global economy.

Losers in Globalization
Domestic workers, domestic jobs, economic independence, people, and resources in a home country due to trade. Globalization in trade can also contribute to poor working conditions, environmental degradation, and political tension.
This term is significant because it is important to understand the pros and cons of trade to figure out what is best for our country.

Actions that are provided for someone. E.g: Legal services, banking services, ect.
This term is significant because services are a major part of trade that people use all over the world.

Trade
The exchange of goods, services, and money between countries.
This is significant because the global economy is very reliant on trade. Trade impacts our everyday lives and makes it convenient to get goods, services, and money from abroad.

Urbanization

Brain Drain
When the younger, more ambitious, and higher educated people of a rural or suburban area move to urban areas causing the rural and suburban areas to become less educated as an overall population.
This term is significant because it is a problem in smaller communities, and causes those places to fall behind since the population is lacking educated people. It also causes urban areas to start to run out of infrastructure, as the population capacity begins to reach its maximum.
Favela
A favela is the equivalent to a slum in Rio. Favelas are areas with high population density and generally low income residents that were never officially planned as a city.
This term is significant because many people live in Favelas. It is interesting to see how a whole functioning city has developed without being planed.
Gentrification
When money is spent for infestructure in cities, and revitalizes a downtown area.
This term is significant because it is important to understand the pros and cons of gentrification, and its affect on the people in a city.
Infrastructure
The basic physical and organizational structure of a city. E.g: houses, schools, roads, sewers, wifi.
This term is important because without infrastructure, urban areas would not exist.
Megacity
A city with a population of over 10 million people. E.g: New York City, LA, Rio.

Per Capita
Per person.
This is important because the term per capita comes up a lot on graphs and data sheets, and it is crucial to know what per capita means to understand that data.
Primate City
A city whose population is at least twice as big as the population of the second largest city. E.g: Mexico City and Paris
This term is significant because when you think of a country with a primate city, the primate city is usually the first and maybe only thing that comes to mind.

Suburban
Suburban is a term that came into being in the 1950s used to describe a residential area outside a city.
This is significant because "suburban" is a relatively new term that started to be used after WWII when soldiers came back and wanted to have families.
Urban
An Urban area is a city, or a center of economic, political, and cultural change. Urban places have more infrastructure and carrying capacity.

Documented Immigrant
A documented immigrant is a person coming from a country, to a different country who has applied and been approved to do so.
This term is significant because discussions around documented vs undocumented immigrants have been very prevalent in the media lately.
Refugee
A refugee is a person fleeing their country because of an imminent danger due to prosecution because of their race, religion, political views and more. There are laws preventing refugees from forcibly being returned to where they came from and being separated from their families.
This term is important because right now, there is a refugee crisis, and a lot of refugees are in need of asylum in safe countries.

UNHRC
The UNHCRC is the UN agreement to protect refugees. The UN makes sure refugees have food, water, and a place to live within refugee camps.
This term is significant because the protection of refugees is very important. If there weren’t refugee camps, many more refugees would die along the way to their destination.
